Title: CW on Radio
Post by: KiernanKate on July 09, 2007, 08:18PM
I had a point of inspiration today and decided to call up my local easy listening radio station to see if they had any CW music.

They didn't and the one dj I talked to, said he had never heard of them so I explained what type of songs they sing, genres and so on.
He said he would look into getting their music on the radio.

I really hope they can get the music on the radio here, it would just make CW all the more popular and well known in Canada.

Nice job!  I hope it works out for you.  Their popularity will only grow and grow, I think.  There just might be a few Canadians that owe you their thanks in the future!

Come to think of it, I've never heard any of their songs on the radio. Have they put any singles up for air yet?

Sadly we won't hear Celtic Woman songs or music on the radio until CW management/agents/producers/marketing people "release a single."    I was told in an e-mail from CW over a year ago that a song from the first CD was going to be released as a single last fall, however it didn't happen for some reason.  Nor were any of the Christmas songs released as a single which is a shame and I hope that changes for the coming Christmas season.    I wonder if a bit of public pressure would help?  ;)

In communicating with the radio station I listen to, even if the DJs/announcers had a personal copy of their CDs (as I offered to send them one) they couldn't play any of the music on air unless it went through the proper and strict radio protocol which involve royalties of course.

I think it may have something to do with the old Payola scandal. I think that if they record something at a radio station venue, then they can play it. At least that is what they do here in Phoenix on the top country station.

Here in the Salt Lake market, KBZN 97.9 FM, used to play tracks from Lisa's solo CD.  Haven't heard them in awhile though.

A Christmas single would be a really smart move because stations really loosen up their format and play different genres during Christmas.

My only complaint is that they're playing Christms songs earlier and earlier. One station here started playing Christmas songs exclusively the day after Veteran's Day last year! Thanksgiving gets lost in the shuffle and I'm kind of burnt out on Christmas songs by the time Christmas gets here.

I play the Christmas cd for 2 reasons. One it is CW and 2 it is cooler at Christmas time and here it gets up to 115

Hopefully CW will be on the radio someday.  And I think that releasing a Christmas song sounds like a great idea because, like said earlier, stations do play a lot of different genres of Christmas music during the season.

I think us as fans can work together and push for there music to be played on the radio then other will hear them and fall in love with them and then they can grow as a group because of their fans and will be around forever.

It would help a lot if EMI would release any of their songs as singles.  Those are the ones that get all the radio air time.

Richard, wouldn't the ladies or even CW Ltd have to approve that happening first before it could happen?

Right. Radio is a very corporate-driven business and has very rigid rules about airplay and playlists. Album-oriented stations (remember those?) are extinct in most markets. The label has to release a single to make playlists and has to promote it to make heavy and moderate rotation (the number of times it's played per day). EMI has to take those steps. Then we can start requesting it.

Richard, wouldn't the ladies or even CW Ltd have to approve that happening first before it could happen?

That type of strategizing is usually done at the label level but the artists can try to push for it.

For all I know, EMI did a cost/benefit analysis of promotion versus potential sales and decided it was best to stick with PBS, concerts, and word of mouth. They're very scientific about it but sometimes they are very wrong, too. You can't always predict artistic success based on demographic studies and industry trends.

hmm...didn't think of that. i'm working on putting together my own radio station and had already planned a couple of celtic woman hours each day (i'd play them 24/7, but my dad's working on it too, and he's not a fan). i guess i'll have to change that. :-(

Last year, I was listening to some Christmas channel on the internet and I heard the Christmas CD all the time. Sometimes, there would be 2 tracks an hour.  I am sorry I can't remember what station that it was on but it was some internet Christmas channel. I also read somewhere here, that someone is playing Amy Rivard's cd on their station.  Let's get the tunes on the air!

Radio stations in the USA today are far more segmented than the  stations I grew up with.  I actually was a DJ on WOKQ-FM in Dover, New Hampshire many, many years ago.  Back then we generally played the known artists (Country) and when a major record label had someone new, they sent the artist on a promotional tour to various markets.

Today, all the music is stored on computers.  DJs are just there to provide time, weather, maybe a traffic alert, or a quick joke.  There are some stations that have a technical person in the building standing by just in case the computer goes on the fritz.  The songs, station identification, and commercials essentially play themselves!

A friend of mine is still a DJ at a Boston country station.  I asked her if she could play "Almost Like a Song" by Ronnie Milsap (it would be a great CW tune now that I think about it!).  She said that there were only four Milsap songs in the playlist--and no deviation.  Why?  It depends on the program director and owner of the station I suppose.

Of course, you have already started to make calls and send e-mails to local stations.  That does get attention.  I suggest focusing on those stations to are "named" such as "Charlie", "Mike", or "Frank."  These are generally the stations that play "everything."  However, even with these stations that say they are like an iPod, they don't really play all possible types of music.

Best,
FireGuyFrank

I know. A few years back I tried to call in about a very serious breaking news event and the DJ said, "I can't break in to announce it right now. The computer isn't ready for me yet!"

And if any of you have ever wondered why so many terrible songs are so "popular" it's because the choices are limited before the songs ever reach your local station. The number of times a song will be played is determined before then, too. It's all about focus group testing, label politics, and money.

Aren't I a cynical ray of sunshine this morning!

Yes you did. One of the replies to my Amy Rivard thread was from forum member penguin laminating device. I don't know where his station is but Amy sent an e-mail to me shortly after stating that she sent a copy of her CD off to him. I did a little dj work myself for awhile and miss the old independent stations that offered flexibility in the play list. I hope Amy and the others can find an avenue to get some air time on radio. We here in the forum though are the first line of offense in promoting CW and the individuals within it. I get the sneaking suspicion that EMI and CW LTD. know that, which is fine. All we can do is what we've been doing and that seems to work pretty well, at least here in the states.

You could ask local college/university stations that have Celtic or Irish or World or New Age music shows to play Celtic Woman. Also if there is a local "Adult Standards" or "Soft Adult Contemporary"  station in your city, you could inquire about them playing Celtic Woman.
(This would probably work better at a locally owned, locally programmed station.)

In a radio forum that I read, the program director or music director of a "new" easy listening type station posted and listed some of the artists that would be played on the station and Celtic Woman was one of the artists listed.

The first time I heard anyone from Celtic Woman was when Orla's "Harry's game" was used as late night bumper music between segments on coast to coast with Art Bell. Yes, I used to be a talk radio junkie. I like my new listening better, its more peaceful.

For anyone who has Comcast, on the music channels in the 500's, I didn't hear any Celtic Woman on the "Sounds of the Season" around Saint Patricks day but they might have played it there. They also have a station that plays New Age music but I'm not sure if they would be on there.

I hadn't thought about asking talk show hosts to use Celtic Woman as bumper music for their shows, even though I work at a news/talk station. By the way our station airs "Coast to Coast AM".

I used to hear all kinds of uncommon music used as bumper music when back in Nebraska. I did a little DJ work at a small station for awhile and we used a lot of Mannheim Steamroller which you couldn't hear anywhere else.

I would listen to the radio more often if...

1) there was more CW music played on stations
2) there were not so many commercials
3) there were better people on the stations
4) things were not so fake and
5) I could listen to the songs that I wanted to when I wanted to hear them.

I guess this means I need to have my own station with my own shoe. To much money needed to do that so I will just be stuck with all the regulars. Oh well!

http://www.calonfm.com/105fm/?page_id=22895     In this weekly radio show- live streamable from  Wrexam in Wales, will play CW upon request. It is a show that caters to the classical crossover genre. The show's host, Jan Rawlinson, is very congenial and encourages interaction on line.  It plays on Sundays from  12-3 pm  CST.
