Post by: Kelli on February 10, 2010, 02:21PM
This is a new documentary, hosted by Moya Brennan, that is set to premier on PBS stations throughout America in March 2010.  The list of talent featured in this documentary is unbelievable!  Orla will be interviewed along with many others.

Much more information is here. (http://www.californiachronicle.com/articles/yb/141111153)  Oh yes, and the amazing Denny Young is the producer!

I'm so excited!!!

Yes this will be a great CD and DVD.....it's good to see Órlagh and Celtic Woman will be on it,
although I think they will be on the follow-up CD.

Make sure you are getting the right CD.....there is a mediocre CD called "Music of Ireland"
that's been out for a few years. The one you want has "Welcome Home" added.
Also, there is a weekly radio show called "Music of Ireland".
I wish they had come up with a more unique and dynamic title.  :(

CD Track List:
Music of Ireland: Welcome Home [Barnes & Noble Exclusive]

1   Óró, Sé do Bheatha 'Bhaile / The Welcome Home Party 3:11
2   Song to the Siren / Sinéad O'Connor 4:49
3   Lullaby for the Dead / Moya Brennan 4:22
4   Under the Tongue / Damien Rice 4:47
5   The Parting Glass / John Sheahan 3:26
6   Forgotten / Moya Brennan 3:46
7   High Hope / Glen Hansard 3:47
8   Maasai Returns / Damien Dempsey 4:16
9   Oh Brother / Andrea Corr 4:09
10   Blacksmith / Dónal Lunny 5:19
11   Dreams Will Come / Paul Brady 3:57
12   You're the One / Moya Brennan 3:43
13   Is Mise 'n Ghaoth/The Lass of Aughrim / Moya Brennan 6:10

So, if I understand this right, the documentary is a two part. The first part is airing in March, and the second part with CW will be aired later in the year?

So, if I understand this right, the documentary is a two part. The first part is airing in March, and the second part with CW will be aired later in the year?

This tells all about it:

http://pr-usa.net/index2.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=330708&pop=1&page=0&Itemid=96

Summary taken from that piece:
The Music of Ireland - Welcome Home CD and a DVD of the program bundled with an exclusive public television bonus CD will be available during the public television broadcasts to viewers who make a donation in support of their local station. The CD bonus tracks include additional songs by Órla Fallon (formerly of Celtic Woman), Ronan Tynan (formerly of The Irish Tenors) and others.
Barnes & Noble, Music of Ireland's exclusive retail partner, will feature a nationwide, in-store promotional campaign starting March 2 that will promote the TV show and feature a special, exclusive deluxe edition combo pack of the CD and DVD. The exclusive deluxe edition will be available both in Barnes & Noble stores and online at Barnes & Noble.com (www.bn.com).
Amazon.com is Music of Ireland's digital music partner and will feature all CD tracks digitally, on a 45-day exclusive basis starting March 2nd.

So it's a PBS production that's going to be part of a bundle deal for pledges.

There is also a nice piece about this on Órlagh's section.

Apart from Celtic Woman, there is a lot of Irish Talent on this CD.

On that video clip, the bit where they all sing "Óró 's é do bheatha 'bhaile" the sound is out of whack.
It is a fiercely patriotic song, part of it wishing for Granuaile (Gráinne) to return with a thousand Irish warriors:

Translation of 2 verses:

Gráinne O'Malley is coming over the sea,
Armed warriors along with her as her guard,
They are Irishmen, not foreigners nor Spanish...
And they will rout the foreigners!

May it please the King of Miracles that I might see,
Although we may live for a week once after,
Gráinne Mhaol and a thousand warriors...
    Dispersing the foreigners!

Here it is performed with passion by Sinéad O'Connor:

Hey guys, as the first part of the documentary is, apparently, going to include Máiréad, and we know that the second one is supposed to have CW on it I've moved this thread off of Órlagh's board and merged it with a duplicate topic on the CW board.

I ran out today and grabbed the CD/DVD combo from B&N. The DVD has some REALLY nifty stuff on it! Seeing the Clancys singing the Little Beggar Man was fantastic and gave me a much clearer picture of all the history behind The High Kings. And there is a ton of just music. Everything from old black & white video of the Chieftains to school groups to people playing at a local pub it really gives a good history of the rise of Irish music. However, hearing Órlagh talk while someone else is signing Harry's Game is just a tad disconcerting... even if it is Moya Brennan.

Now for the bad news, at least for CW fans, Órlagh's on screen for about 5 seconds though she talks for about 10. And while Máiréad is in the opening... she doesn't actually appear anywhere in the show itself. I went through it twice just to be sure because that doesn't make any sense but she's nowhere to be found. I'd imagine that the footage we're seeing is from the second part of the special that is supposed to feature CW.

.....However, hearing Órlagh talk while someone else is signing Harry's Game is just a tad disconcerting... even if it is Moya Brennan.
Moya Brennan could say the same about Órlagh, as it was Moya's song from the start in 1982, as part of the group Clannad.
The TV mini-series "Harry's Game" about the troubles in Northern Ireland, was made by my old employer - Yorkshire Television.
They used Clannad and Moya's hauntingly beautiful voice for the Theme song, so it was she who made this song famous throughout Europe.  It won the Ivor Novello Award, and was nominated for a BAFTA,
the first song in Irish to achieve that distinction.
Moya was known at that time by her real name Máire, it was changed to the phonetic spelling later.
Ten years later in 1992, the song finally came to the USA and went to the top of the Billboard Charts.

Here is the original single cover from 28 years ago:

Yes Celtic Woman will be on the second DVD in September / October.

Quote from http://www.wliw.org/productions//performance/more-about-music-of-ireland/648/
"A sequel to Music of Ireland – Welcome Home is planned for late 2010 spotlighting more recent artists including U2,

I watched the DVD last night. Tremendous music and performers, but for me there were no surprises.
I grew up immersed in this kind of music (except U2 of course) my Dad and my uncles were singing songs
which the Clancy Brothers later sang, when the Clancys were in diapers.
Traditional music has been played and sung by families in Irish homes through the ages.....it is ingrained in the spirit.
It is how Irish people express their joys, sorrows, fears, triumphs.....every emotion. It is heard at every celebration....baptisms, confirmations, weddings, and of course wakes.
It's very competitive as well, you have to work your way up through the fleadheanna ceoil (music festivals)
winning medals so you can enter the next stage. To be an All-Ireland Champion like Máiréad is quite an achievement.

I was a young lass when I first heard the Chieftains and the Clancy's, about the same time in the early 1960s.
I have accumulated most of their albums / CDs.
I was in Tipperary in the mid 1960s and there was somebody going to Carrick-on-Suir to a pub session.
I was offered a ride with them, and was delighted to see the Clancy Brothers singing in the Pub, they were
home from the USA for a holiday. Most of the Music in Ireland is played just for the love of music.
Just as their National GAA Sports are played for the love of sport, not for financial gain.

The problem is that Irish people take their music for granted......until they see what an impact it can have
on the rest of the World. I think that's why the ladies of CW always say they are amazed by the reaction of audiences in the US. Plus it gives people like me a new appreciation of our musical heritage.

Moya Brennan and Denny Young have hit the ball out of the park with this documentary. I think its fabulous. It tells the story with one priceless clip of archival footage and fresh on camera interviews after another. Even if you only care about Celtic Woman your going to want to own this Part 1 before Part 2 comes out.

This DVD/CD is not expensive from Barnes and Noble. Shamelessly plugging Órla's Garden  ;)  you can link to B & Ns online store here:

Surprisingly the PBS broadcast version is even better than the DVD. (At least the KNPB broadcast I saw). The two national PBS pledgepersons are identified as Laura Savini and David Rubinsohn. Poor David dosen't get to do anything cool. For some reason Laura gets all the extra converstions with Moya, John Sheahan, additional music, bits of Irish history, etc.

I hope everyone can catch the broadcast version. If you do please hang with Laura! You will see some really great stuff imbedded within her pledge segments.

Some notes about the DVDs...

Music of Ireland DVD Part 1: Welcome Home

The involvement of Celtic Woman performers is brief. The group isn't shown together or mentioned by name in Part 1. Mairead and Orla appear very briefly in footage near the start of the DVD. Orla also speaks briefly during the Creative Influences segment of the DVD.

The DVD is essentially about the evolution and propagation of Irish music during the 20th century. It's hosted by Moya Brennan. It was actually quite interesting and I did learn / re-learn a few things when I watched it. Some of the music I actually haven't heard before. You may get more or less out of it depending on your level of knowledge on the subject. It's effective as a documentary, but watching it probably isn't going to be a life-changing experience. It's worth getting if you can get it at a reasonable price after shipping, but it's not a "must have" item.

The bonus material is essentially a video brochure of some places in Ireland. Most of the focus is on obscure places off the beaten path. I understand they were trying to draw attention to some nice places that potential tourists wouldn't otherwise think about, but personally, I think most of those places would be for people that have been to Ireland a lot and have seen most of the major attractions already. Some of the sub-segments consisted of someone talking about how nice the place they grew up was while a bunch of nice scenery was shown. It's enjoyable, but it wouldn't be very useful for someone actually planning a trip to Ireland for the first time.

If you're thinking of getting the DVD just to see some of the Celtic Woman performers, that alone is probably not worth it. If you're looking to add Celtic Woman fringe-materials to your collection, there are plenty of other Celtic Woman related works that could take precedence.

Music of Ireland DVD Part 2: Welcome to America

This DVD features a bit more of Celtic Woman, although it's still a pretty small part of the DVD.

Orla talks for a bit in the Coast to Coast segment. She has a very soothing aura, whether she's talking or singing.

The Deep Rooted Inspirations segment has the most Celtic Woman content. It includes interviews with Mairead Nesbitt, David Downes, and Orla. They don't say anything we haven't heard them say in other interviews over the years. It also has a few clips from the original Celtic Woman show at the Helix (Meav, Lisa Kelly, Chloë, Orla, and Mairead Nesbitt), as well as some clips from Songs from the Heart (Lisa Kelly, Chloë, Lynn, Alex, and Mairead Nesbitt ... you might be able to see Amy Rivard in the background if you look really carefully). There weren't any clips from A New Journey or Hayley ... or Deirdre. I'm sure they had their reasons.

Like Part 1, the documentary in Part 2 covers some of the key acts in Irish music. Part 2 focuses on more recent acts. It was informative, but personally, I found Part 1 even more interesting, since I knew less about some of the Irish music during the 50s-70s.

The bonus features on Part 2: Welcome to America are excellent, quite possibly the best part of either DVD. The bonus features are live songs (with some interview portions as well) with some Irish acts:
- Slide: this was a fast-paced and really fun number
- Screaming Orphans: They performed Farewell to the Life of a Rover on a couch. It really enjoyed the harmony. I don't know that much about the group, but the woman on the right looked pretty uncomfortable at times, possibly because they asked her on the spot to sing the part she normally plays on the accordion.
- Dervish: This was a head-bobbing mid-tempo reel.
- Damien Dempsey: This was definitely different. I'll say this, he sings with his heart.
- Margaret Healy: This was a softer song. It was nice.

Overall

If you have to choose between Part 1 and 2, it depends on your taste, I suppose. Part 2 has more of Celtic Woman, though neither part has enough to justify getting the DVDs solely for that purpose (unless your Celtic Woman collection has progressed deep into their fringe works because you already have all the other group and solo concert DVDs). Part 1 is potentially more informative (depends on whether or not you grew up with that music or are already familiar with Irish music history). The collection of music and the range of artists covered in both DVDs is good. Personally, I enjoyed the music in the main documentary of Part 1 slightly more than the main documentary of Part 2, though I did greatly enjoy the bonus songs in Part 2.

Anyways, I hope you enjoyed the writeup and maybe this will be helpful to someone some day as so many of the writeups on this forum have been helpful to me over the years.
