Title: Songs for Mairead to Cover
Post by: Tiffany Gray on August 23, 2013, 02:30PM
Yeah, I post this in a lot of the individual member threads lol but I wanted to know what songs you think Mairead could sing beautifully!  :)

Thanks for this neat thread, Tiffany.  WOW, I don't even know where to begin.  The songs she sang in the videos on You Tube were all really good.

Since she seems to be more traditional (in my opinion a lot like Lynn), something like "The Fields of Athenry" would be grand.

I can almost hear her singing Fields Of Gold...

Or On My Own, from Les Miserables
She seems to kinda have a "Broadway" voice

I really can't think of anything! :D  But I would love to hear a duet between her and Lisa Lambe.  :o

She has recorded " The Fields of Athenry".
It it on the same Album as Hayley´s  "World on Union"
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B005I8R0WU/ref=dm_mu_dp_trk17

A nice recording.

Since she sounds a bit like Alex, how about " You`ll Be In My Heart"?

Title: Re: Songs for Mairead to Cover
Post by: Hubert on August 24, 2013, 08:16AM
She sounds a little like Alex and a little like Lynn so any song David gives her will be performed quite well.

The Lass Of Glanshee
Crucan na pBaiste
My Lagan Love
Carolina Rua
True Colors
When I Was In My Prime
Newry Boat Song
I Dreamt I Dwellt In Marble Halls
Dante's Prayer
The Highwayman (Deirdre's song with Celtic Thunder)
Harry's Game
Skyline Pigeon (though I actually want Lil' Lambe to sing that!)
The Wexford Carol
Siulil a Ruin
Danny Boy
Shining Water
Summer Song
Lift The Wings
Home And The Heartland
An Maighden Mara

Let us Love In Peace
Our Kind Of Love
God's Own Country
(without the catholic/protestant thingie)
would be great, and a great statement from CW! Especially if they're sung by Mairéad!!!

Her voice similar to Alex's and I even hear a similarity to Hayley's. She's not so much a Chloe replacement as she is a unique and totally new vocal sound.

Title: Re: Songs for Mairead to Cover

There is no such thing like replacement for any of the CWuties. One Celtic Woman "leaves", another one comes.

She'll gonna be great. And I think Chloe's later solos are not right for her :/ Rather her older ones, like those from the Original Helix shows!

Ditto!  Their voices would harmonize really well, but more than that, they each have a voice that made me stop everything I was doing the first time I heard them sing, so I wouldn't miss a note. CW has never had a bad singer in their line-up, but I think Lisa L and Mairead C are two of the best they've had.

Some pf the posts are off-topic.  I was asking what songs you think Mairead should cover (not just CW songs, but any song).  It's just for fun...

The song cover topic easily lends itself to related topics, such as duet partners and old versus new songs from the CW show, any of which she could potentially cover on tour. I don't think that is anyone straying too far. :)

I think she'd do a great job with The Snows They Melt the Soonest (one of my favorites from Cara Dillon), but honestly, I'd most like to hear her sing things I haven't heard before. Nothing beats discovering a talented new artist, but second to that is discovering a new song. This includes songs old in age, but new to most of us.

I wasn't talking about that.  Some people were talking about Mairead can't reallly "replace" Chloe.

Anyway... I think she should sing Isle of Innisfree.

Oh I'm sorry! In my thought of trying to pick songs for her, I began thinking of which CW songs she should adopt and then that led to who she sounded most similar to. The Chloe thing was just a side comment on my part. Many apologies!

On your original topic: I would love to see the girls (especially now with Mairead) sing The Raggle Taggly Gypsy!

How about "Who'll Come With Me" I would love to hear her sing that...

I hope not.  Sorry, but that song just bums me out.  Odd, because I can listen to "The Last Rose of Summer" without feeling suicidal.

I think one thing that would be really cool would be if Mairead C busted out her acordian, Mairead Nesbitt on fiddle, Lil Lambe breaking out the spoons, and Susan perhaps on bodhran or something (I don't even know if Suze plays an instrument) were all to come out on stage and do a performance of Whiskey in the Jar similar to The High Kings version.

I so want her to play the accordeon.

And that was a cool idea, btw.! Hmh... most singers play an instrument... The piano maybe?

True, but Susan was more of a theatre performer before Celtic Woman. So she may never have bothered to learn an instrument.

Most singers learn an instrument whilethey get their musical education. Plus, Susan is from a musical family.

I can't wait to hear Mairead sing songs with the group like The Parting Glass! Her accent seems to be a bit thicker than Chloe's. Like Lisa Lambe's is!

That's what I thought when I first heard her!  I think it would be wonderful if she would cover "Carolina Rua" - and perhaps she could play some accordion in it... :)

Yanni's "Nightingale"
https://youtu.be/hoZij8hupaU

I don't think this would be safe to perform on a tour night after night, but perhaps on an album.

This would be great for Meav too.
