Title: Resolution on SftH DVD Post by: CWazyTom on June 01, 2016, 05:24PM I've been wondering this for a long time, so I'll go ahead and ask...
Does anyone know what was going on with the focus / resolution for the DVD (as compared to the PBS special)? A lot of the closeups were good, but some of it seemed really fuzzy / low resolution, especially for the long shots (ie. the ones with Powerscourt House in the background). Some of those shots reminded me of what you'd see on a worn-out VHS cassette or by putting too many splitters between the input source and TV. It was really weird. I know I'm not the only one that experienced it. I used to see reviews for the DVD with other people mentioning it. Don't get me wrong, I still loved it! But it was such a beautiful setting and it would have been even more awesome with true HD quality. I remember I tried tinkering with the aspect ratio and resolution on my DVD player and my TV, but I never found a combo of settings that fixed the issue. For a while, I thought maybe the long shots from that angle were shot with a camera that had a different aspect ratio / resolution or had something wrong with the lens. But the same shots seemed fine during the PBS special, so unless they shot the special and DVD with different lenses... Some issue that happened during the editing of the DVD? I'm also curious if all copies of the DVD were all like that or just the ones in the batch that I saw? I suspect mine was a North American version (Region 1). Really curious for your feedback. This one's been bugging me for ages. Title: Re: Resolution on SftH DVD Post by: Emer Dreamer on June 01, 2016, 06:02PM I remember getting mine at the SFTH concert tour merc table at my venue. That was the last year of that tour and perhaps there was a re-release that cleared up the problems you mentioned. Maybe it was- as you said- regional. I believe you, it's just that I seemingly had better luck. 8)
Title: Re: Resolution on SftH DVD Post by: CWazyTom on June 01, 2016, 07:49PM It was so strange.
Here's the kind of stuff on reported on Amazon that I was talking about: https://www.amazon.com/Celtic-Woman-Songs-Heart/product-reviews/B002UZXJAG/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_viewpnt_rgt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1&sortBy=helpful&filterByStar=critical&pageNumber=1 It was reported when it was originally released and there's recent reviews of that issue as well. I even tried running in on VLC on a computer instead of in a Home Theatre system's DVD player, but the result was the same. I imagine it can't be all the copies of the DVD sold by Amazon in the US / Canada that were affected, or even more people would reported it. But I tried twice and ran into it both times. Been pretty much living off YouTube as far as SftH goes. Thought about trying a different retailer, but I have no reason to suspect a "brick and mortar" retailer would have a different version of the DVD. I didn't have problems with any of the other DVDs. Total head scratcher, this one. Title: Re: Resolution on SftH DVD Post by: Emer Dreamer on June 01, 2016, 08:39PM Hmmm.. okay. My concert for SFTH was in the late summer of 2011- a year and a half after the review date in question. They toured that particular tour for 2 years. They must have had the new and improved copies with them at the different venues that year as opposed to 2010. Thanks for the info. :)
Title: Re: Resolution on SftH DVD Post by: rfcw on June 07, 2016, 10:26AM Interesting, Was this due to an Amazon order & not retail(?)
Title: Re: Resolution on SftH DVD Post by: CWazyTom on June 07, 2016, 10:37AM It's possible, I suppose.
I don't think I ended up trying a retail copy at the time. They're a bit hard to find now (where I am, anyways), but I do look from time to time. I think I'll have another look this week. Still, it seems very, very odd that even in the Amazon batch, not everybody reported it. In fact most people didn't. There must have been unaffected copies too and I just got unlucky. Title: Re: Resolution on SftH DVD Post by: CWazyTom on July 09, 2016, 09:42PM There's definitely something different about that DVD, but there's also something wrong with my setup or equipment.
Played a version of SftH that I got straight from the CW site on a different system. It looks and sounds absolutely beautiful. Still looks fuzzy on my setup. So I'm not sure why my setup behaves differently for this DVD (despite tinkering with video output on DVD player and video input on TV) yet all my other CW DVDs play nice. But looks like the DVD itself is fine :) Soooooo nice to finally enjoy this in full HD with a quality image :D :D :D :D |
