Title: Homecoming special / DVD
Post by: CWazyTom on July 03, 2017, 04:06PM
It looks like the show at the 3Arena in Dublin on September 2, 2017 will be recorded as the next Celtic Woman PBS special / DVD!!!

https://www.rte.ie/entertainment/2017/0703/887332-celtic-women/

As it is part of the Voices of Angels tour, I expect it will be a Voices of Angels DVD (although there is precedent for it being named after the next tour, as was the case with Emerald, which was recorded during the 2013 World tour).

Honestly, I thought since the announcement of this concert that it may very well end up being the next DVD special. I just hope they give Mairead A Time For Us and not Dulaman. Wonder if they'll have the orchestra?!

Can Meav do Dulaman & join for Amazing Grace than or O America if used?

I Don't think this time another title is as better than
Voices of Angels. Celtic Woman by the Angels(?)
Emerald was fine it wasn't the Anniversary nor was the tour to do with Believe.

All good thoughts.

Given the size of the venue I suspect there will be a live orchestra ( probably not a 72-piece orchestra  :D ), but it's hard to predict those kinds of things in the post-David-Downes era. Orchestra and a massive choir, I'm hoping. A full choir really fills out the sound, especially with just 3 singers. They all have strong voices. But even Lisa, Meav, Chloë, Alex etc who excelled at projecting their voices, still benefited from a rich, full sound supporting them.

Yeah, I suspected this might be the DVD, but couldn't count on that being the case.

I'm Entirely Surprised There Hasn't been a video or clip of Susan's She Moved thru The Fair Lavish  :) Choreographed  Day Dance Performance! * I really hope they capture this stunning story telling song come to life on the Voices of Angels DVD PBS Special*! ::)

I wonder if Susan will sing The Voice in the special?

Well, this isn't an easy post to type, but I can't go see the VoA DVD recording at the 3Arena in Dublin.

I could still win the contest, I suppose, but that is the only foreseeable chance of me going at this point.

This one falls in the category just short of devastating, but:
- I've already seen Voices of Angels twice this year. If it was 'pre-tour' DVD recording rather than a 'post-tour' one, I would want to go even more, so it's probably for the best.
- I have to imagine most of the good seats are gone by now. If they're not, don't even tell me ... I don't want to know.
- Pretty much everyone I was planning to travel with bailed ... again.
- It's too short notice.
- If I'm going to go to Ireland, I want to go for more than just one show.
- I can't go for any more extended trips any time soon after burning through my budget several times over this year...
- ... and at the end of the day, going to Ireland on the fumes from the dying embers of that budget just so I can say I was in a big audience for a CW DVD recording can't be reasonably justified.
- Lastly, I want to go see Lisa again next year and I want to go see Celtic Woman at Red Rocks should I have another chance. This dream of seeing a CW DVD recording has to die so I can live another dream some other day.

I feel like I'm letting the girls down by not supporting them. I'm also really worried I might not get another chance to see them record a DVD.

Typing out the justification makes me feel a bit better.

Sorry if I'm away from the forum for a bit folks. I might be in bad shape for a while.

I'm hoping I get over this before I see the DVD or PBS special, because if not, it's going to be painful to watch it.

I am curious if they'll be some new songs or is it pretty much like HFC with A Time For Us and O America as extras. This is the 1st Time ever we have a tour before a DVD PBS Special under the Same Name other than HFC! Emerald tour only had Susan solos, & Mairead's being different plus Lynn of course in there adding changes the rest was exact to the Special. Same Dresses or Different as Emerald (few girls same others not.)

Interesting........predictions ;)

I am SO excited about this! Here is what I'm hoping for.

1. I hope they let Mairead sing A Time for Us instead of Dulaman. I LOVED watching her perform that, but I want to see her perform ATFU in the DVD.
2. I hope Meav guest stars. If she does, she'll probably sing Dulaman. If not, I hope they keep Dulaman, and let Tara sing it! It's about time they give her a SINGING solo, because she has an AMAZING voice!
3. I hope they perform the new arrangements of The Voice and The Parting Glass, as well as Eabha's Sean Nos song (I don't know how to spell it lol).

At some point, I REALLY hope they have Tara play harp and sing on a new version of Shenandoah. I want this for 2 reasons: First and foremost, it's a beautiful song and the fact that it's a slower song means the harp will add an extra layer of beauty along with whatever orchestral accompaniment they choose to give, in addition to Tara's beautiful voice. Secondly, and perhaps even more importantly, it can be done as a sort of dedication to Mairead Nesbitt, who played that song for multiple tours over the course of her CW career, from her predecessor, but it'd be done in a completely different way!

I agree completely. It would also be nice because it's a passing of the torch song but it'll be different.

Glad you guys like the idea! And I really do think it'd be great cuz Tara could also mention her harp playing on Destiny and her dream of performing with CW one day.

I also wish, more than anything else, that Celtic Woman would consider tapping a different former member for every special. Not to tour! Just to record a solo on the DVD and a group song with the girls! Like how Meav has done with Destiny and VOA. But not just Meav. Surprise us! Like if they did a Christmas show and Alex randomly popped in to sing a few dongs. Or if on VOA Lynn would take Meav's solos.

I Definitely Agree! For Christmas Lynn or and Alex absolutely. As for VOA Special I would want Meav on O America if they did it it since Meav she was not on SFTH while Lynn was plus Meav would pull the lead on the 2016 version Best! However for Dulaman let have Lynn instead we are very familiar watching Meav on Dulaman already on ANJ. Plus Lynn is the only Dulaman Dynamo not to have had a DVD or CD recording of her CW Dulaman if you aren't counting the video footage in Caranua version!
;D I was thinking how beautifully Lynn could pull off those VOA versions, but let's have Meav for O America with Lynn. Is that too much!
Alex would be perfect for it too I Believe. Lets give her DulamanVOA ;D

Actually Lynn's not the only Dulaman soloist who didn't get to record a DVD/CD of it with CW. There was Hayley, Alex, and Mairead Carlin.

Title: Re: Voices of Angels special / DVD
Post by: rfcw on August 17, 2017, 09:26AM
Yes that's correct!
You are right, the reason I only mentioned Lynn was she was the longest time second CW after Meav who performed it for several years. Lisa L came third and even though Lisa's was really special wish Lynn would have credit for all those 4-5 years doing it on her own.
Hayley & Alex were very short fill in's & Mairead is not yet until whether she does it on The VOA taping or not or for the future!
I really wanted to hear Alex though so bad when she toured & done it for CW ten years show the two images are fantastic!
I wonder if we will get a full track to CaraNua's version! :P

So here's a question: Do we think they'll have the orchestra for this show? The VOA cd specifically featured the orchestra as part of the production. The only thing of it is, I have NO idea of the size of the 3Arena.

Further, will they change the stage up a bit if they have the room? After all, the PBS Specials usually feature a more elaborate stage than the tour. And will they include the giant monitor in the background? Personally I hope not cuz I don't care for the monitor. I think it's a waste and a bit of a distraction.

And will Meav be in this show? Cuz I REALLY wanna hear Mairead perform A Time For Us. I love that song and thought she sounded heavenly on it. And if Meav joins, does this mean all new costumes? And would she join them on Oró?

So many questions! What do you guys think?

Great questions!

My thoughts:

* I don't think there will be a full orchestra, but I think there's a very good chance they will have some string accompaniment on stage. It was very effective on Saturday Night with Miriam (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8pW4aOKqC4).

* Yes, I think Méav will be in the show in some capacity. I think she'll only be in one or two songs and I don't think she'll insert herself in a song the girls already sang on the VoA tour, except for Time to Say Goodbye or perhaps The Parting Glass, those being potential closing numbers. Although I agree Méav in A Time For Us with MC would be pretty spectacular. O America is a possibility.

* Yes, I think they will have a video screen of some sort. The team designing their sets seams to like the video screen. I think it added to the show for a lot of people, but personally, I didn't pay hardly any attention to it. I didn't find it distracting either though.

* I think there will be differences to the stage setup. I don't think there will be a complete overhaul. I'd expect the main architecture of the stage to remain intact, with multiple levels of stairs and some central extending platforms. I think the minimalist set of the Destiny DVD turned off a lot of people, so I'd be surprised if they rolled out the exact same stage as the VoA tour without at least some elegant curtains or something. I would also be surprised if it was as elegant a set as Believe though. Somewhere in between, like Emerald.

* Re: costumes, I'm really not sure. I don't think Méav joining in itself would necessitate a complete wardrobe overhaul. I wouldn't be surprised to see them have similar dresses to the tour but with some tweaks. I also would be surprised to see them come out with completely new outfits (or at least a new set for one of the acts), but I think it's a bit less likely considering there's still more of the 2017 VoA tour left this year. Does anyone remember what they did for the Emerald recording? Were they wearing the same outfits as the Believe tour, or did they have new ones for the recording?

* We've already heard the girls tweaking some of their arrangements since the North American tour (ie. Time to Say Goodbye) and I would be very surprised if they left out some of their newer fancies ("Water Under the Bridge" or "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For"). I would like to hear this arrangement of Shenandoah (https://youtu.be/BKvGMAtFVps), but I don't think it will happen.

Certainly lots of intriguing possibilities.

This answers some questions:
http://www.irishnews.com/arts/2017/08/31/news/world-beating-irish-ensemble-celtic-woman-brings-voices-of-angels-tour-home-1123266/

...
Celtic Woman always perform a show rather than a concert and the Dublin event, which will be recorded for television broadcast in America by the PBS network, will include a fresh stage design, breathtaking choreography, and brand new costumes.

The live concert will feature many songs from their Voice of Angels albums, as well as a large ensemble of equally talented musicians and dancers whose exceptional skill and high energy bring a fresh fusion to centuries of musical and cultural tradition.

During each show the girls have three or four costume changes and Tara is looking forward to getting into Simon O'Mahony's latest designs.

"They are simply stunning. He knows what works for us, but we can also say what we like and he can make it accordingly. We are very lucky. Mine is slightly shorter to enable me to skip around the stage – but I still get the sparkle," she laughs.

...

From what Michael Brown said on facebook, the setlist was the same as the tour except that they took out Orinoco Flow and one other song that was like a pirate song! Other than that,  I guess we will have to wait on an official review from someone. He did say they had new gowns.

Notes from the Voices of Angels DVD recording

Here are some notes I've pieced together so far from various reports of the DVD recording.

BTW, if you missed my previous post showing some of the pictures from the show I assembled from the various social media platforms, check it out.  ;)

Set List (unofficial):

Act 1:
1. Mo Ghile Mear
2. My Heart Will Go On
3. Across the World
4. Walk Beside Me
5. Dúlamán
6. She Moved Thru' The Fair
7. Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears
8. Danny Boy
9. Fields of Gold
10. Westering Home
11. Níl Sé'n Lá

Act 2:
Act 2:
1. Amazing Grace
2. For the Love of A Princess
3. Ave Maria
4. Water Under The Bridge
5. Ard Uí Chuain/Sadhbh Ní Bhruinneallaigh
6. The Voice
7. Time To Say Goodbye
8. You Raise Me Up
9. The Kesh Inn
10. Téir Abhaile Riú
11. The Parting Glass
12. Ray Solo / Floorplay (aka the percussion number)
13. Mo Ghile Mear (re-take)
14. Danny Boy (re-take)
15. Fields of Gold (re-take)
16. Westering Home (re-take)

Omissions compared to the 2017 Voices of Angels tour:
- Ó Ró Sé do Bheatha Bhaile
- Orinoco Flow (strange, considering they posted a video of them rehearsing it before the show). I wonder if they decided the rehearsal for Orinoco Flow was good enough and they decided to use that for the DVD so they had more time to retake other songs.

Anabel Sweeney:
- The Celtic Woman singer contest winner from Co Waterford, Ireland
- Sang a solo (Fields of Gold)
- Also sang the opening solo part of Westering Home
- She was a bit nervous, but overall, handled herself very well, particularly for her first big live performance
- She was apparently very professional, had great stage presence, and was funny as well

Dresses:

Act 1:
- Susan: Bright blue (she wore it during her dance number as well)
- Éabha: Medium blue
- Mairéad Carlin: Dark purple
- Tara: Pattern
- Anabel: White

Ceili:
... Working on it

Act 2:
- Susan: Red
- Éabha: Dark blue
- Mairéad Carlin: Black
- Tara: Gold

Songs that were particularly well-received:
- For the Love of a Princess
- Ard Tí Chuain/Sadhbh Ní Bhruinneallaigh
- Ave Maria
- Fields of Gold (Anabel)

Orchestra:
- 14 pieces
- 12 violins, a cello, and a bass fiddle

Band Notes:
- Gavin Murphy on piano

Stage:
- A modified version of the Destiny tour set
- Drapes to the sides of the stage
- Wasn't much decoration on the risers, but obviously more stage decoration than for the Destiny DVD

Production:
- They did the usual applause recordings (aka level checks) before the show
- There were a few lighting and audio issues, so they had to redo a few of the songs a few times
(There were a bunch of problems during Mo Ghile Mear, Fields or Gold, Westering Home)
- They changed the act 2 set list during intermission
- The recorded the band percussion number and The Kesh Inn after The Parting Glass. Apparently some people started to leave before they realized there was still recording happening.
- Then, they re-recorded Mo Ghile Mear, Danny Boy, Fields of Gold, and Westering Home and another version of the finale
- The recording started around 8:20 and wrapped up between 11:00 PM - midnight

Other Notes:
- Brendan Graham was in the audience and Mairéad got emotional when introducing him to the audience
- Some people tried a stage and greet after the show, but that was not successful

Overall:
- Overall impressions I've read from the show were quite positive, in spite of the technical / production issues.
- The crowd was apparently enthusiastic and supportive.
- There have been a few people that were disappointed with the production quality and all the restarts. Some people have said they felt they were catering more to PBS than to the audience in attendance. But as a DVD recording (not just a regular tour show), some technical issues and re-takes were to be expected.
- It sounds like the show went over quite well overall.

also, about the people being disappointed, would it be right to say, they should be lucky this happened at all?

Exactly right! Thanks for them Great images! I was a bit confused
I thought Susan wore white at the beginning it looks like it in some of the pics!

Exactly. Most of us didn't even get to see it. We're all very lucky that Celtic Woman continues to produce such beautiful work.

I feel like I have to rant a little, so please bear with me...

Expectations of Perfection

Some people wanted to see and perhaps expected to see a tour show instead of the "DVD recording process," which is the product the audience actually saw. Personally I think the imperfect process that goes into making the DVDs that have captured our hearts over the years deserves to be appreciated. All the work and complexity that goes into the show should make one appreciate the finished product even more.

There's so much more involved in a DVD than a regular tour show. The lighting is different. The audio is different. The stage layout is different. People are standing in different places. True, every venue is different for sound and lighting, but that difference is magnified for a DVD / special recording. There's so much more complexity and pressure.

It's not like they had weeks of rehearsals in the 3Arena. Most parts of a show like this come together for the first time at rehearsals the day before or even the day of the show. But people see the perfect DVDs and expect the recording to be perfect too.

With all the factors involved, expecting a flawless one-take for an entire show means all the different parts have to come together perfectly. That's asking a lot and defies the odds.

Granted, it sounds like they had a few more issues than normal, but unfortunately for the audience in attendance, it happens.

Perceptions of who the show is for

It seems to me like there were people in the audience that thought the show was for them and there just happened to be a DVD recording taking place. Personally, I don't agree with that mindset. The audience in a DVD recording is part of the show. The show IS for the audience of the DVD / special, not so much for the people in attendance for the recording, which is completely unlike a regular tour show. The audience is there to support the performers and yes, to a certain extent enjoy the performance, but there's an expectation that the audience will be supportive of the process too. It sounds like for the most part, they were indeed extremely supportive.

I think part of the problem for some people in the audience is that there was only one show (not just for the recording, but one show in Ireland, for the entire tour). This was the only chance to see the show for some people. So I can understand if some of them just wanted to see a good show and weren't interested at all in the process. That's a branch of fans I'd like to refer to as "customers."

The problem with having a second, regular, non-recorded show for "customers" is that:
- Ireland is their home market but not their main market.
- They want the place to be packed for the DVD recording and it's hard enough to fill an arena for one show. They could end up with people going to see the regular tour show and not be able to fill the seats for the DVD recording.
- A regular show doesn't draw as many people from out of town / country. It might be hard to fill the seats in an arena that big for a regular show.
- It takes time and money to promote each show.

The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. And there are more people in the fan base than there were in the attendance.

Just a thought...

Perception is very important. I'm trying to analyze this from the perspective of a really passionate fan, not just a customer. I love Celtic Woman. But not everyone will feel the same way and I have to accept that.

We've already had this argument on a different thread. People are entitled to be disappointed and to express their opinions. But here's something to think about ...

People like me are predisposed to think negatively. It takes a conscious effort for me to be positive. Some people see that kind of negative stuff and believe it, without considering a broader picture. Then they don't go buy the DVD, they don't get tickets to the next tour, and they either don't spread the word about Celtic Woman or they turn other people off from the show ... people that might really, REALLY need a show like Celtic Woman in their lives. People like me.

Just think of where some of us would be if we had been the ones reading those non-contextualized, non-counterbalanced negative comments and just decided Celtic Woman wasn't worth our time. Think about that and tell me those negative opinions out there don't matter and that we should just ignore them.

Just a thought.

We Still Care About Each Other

A lot of this discussion has been about the few negative opinions out there, as there always will be. I feel it's worth re-iterating that most of the opinions I've seen of the show have been quite positive, in spite of all the unfortunate technical issues. That, to me, shows that Celtic Woman still has a fiercely loyal fan base that cares deeply about the music and the show.

Celtic Woman took the time to address the mistakes that happened. Sure, they have to put out a high quality product if they want to sell DVDs, CDs, and tickets. But lots of companies put out a useless product still expecting it to sell. Therefore, I choose to believe that Celtic Woman insisted on getting it right because they still care about their product and then fans.

Celtic Woman is a Team

I think one important thing to take away from this is that Celtic Woman is and always has been a team. It takes a whole team to make the show as incredible as it normally is. Things we take for granted, like sound, lighting, and everything that goes on behind the scenes as well, take a lot of effort and talent. So when things go off without a hitch and we see that 'perfect' show on stage, I hope we all appreciate just a little bit more how lucky we are.

Really sorry for the rant, but thanks for reading.

It seems like the show went well.  I have a couple of questions though.

In Westering Home, it seems like that Anabel Sweeney sang the part Mairead typically sings, am I correct on that?  If so, why did they have Anabel sing Mairead's part out of all the girls?

Also, besides Glenn, Ronan, Carl, and that guy whose name I forget, I noticed an additional choir.  Who were they, and what songs were they in?

Yes, it sounds like it's going to be a very nice DVD.

That's my understanding, that Anabel sang the opening part of Westering Home which Mairead normally sings. One could speculate why Anabel was given that particular part:
- Westering Home already had a couple of "guest singers" in the Destiny DVD (Rebecca and Méav). Maybe they figured it was a good song to give Anabel a part in to.
- Maybe they asked Anabel which group song she wanted to do from their set list and that's the one she picked.
- Maybe Westering Home was a good song to have her blend in without re-working too much of the existing arrangement for her voice. I doubt she would have had too much time to rehearse with the group before the show.
- Maybe Westering Home just happened to be the next in the set list and Anabel was already going to be on stage, so they decided to have her be in that song. True, she didn't necessarily have to do the opening part, but maybe Gavin and Méav wanted her to open a song to give her the spotlight. Personally, I would have preferred her to open My Land, but maybe they didn't perform it (I'm waiting on the set list for Act 2).

Lots of possibilities. An interesting question, but we may not know the answer unless we can pry it out of them during a live Q+A or something.

Re: the choir. is Alan McGrath the one you're thinking of? The choir looked pretty big. We may have to wait and see if their individual names are in the credits on the DVD or in the liner notes. I'm not sure what songs the expanded choir was in. Personally, I'm going to wait for the DVD to document that.

Those dresses look different Eabha looks fresh teal, Mairead Dark Purple & Susan White. It looks Susan's opening dress is far much nicer than the bright blue for SMTTF unless its at a distance and angle it looks different or she had an extra layer at the entrance than the rest of the show. Perfect sense why her Act 2 spotlights her than Eabha is for Act 1. Mairead pretty much the same dark shade similar to Destiny her two solo had the same dress blue than the two others I wonder why I see Fire was not done in her 1st Act Red Dress. Eabha may of been Blue but lighting changed it to look different bright bluish teal to blue.

I don't understand why they had different dresses. Usually for a DVD recording of a tour they wear the same dresses. Will the dresses they wore the other night be used for 2018 tour? They may wear them for the VOA tour in Australia, Belgium, Japan, Netherlands ,Switzerland, United Kingdom.

I've noticed the drapes on both side of the stage is from Emerald tour back in 2014. I wonder if there's a warehouse Celtic Woman uses to store old set pieces from past tours.

I Think it's so cool at the time of Emerald PBS show Lisa Lambe even though Chloe was still at that time the original star with Mairead Nesbitt alongside of course until after the DVD, Lisa became a spotlight for CW no more the new girl but a popular known favorite.
They had 2 Blondes & she was the star centered red head.
Now four years after it's flopped.
2 Dark Haired & one star centered Blonde Susan now the mother oldest longest member of the current group.
You can see Chloe & Susan wore Blues & Lisa L was the only one in fall light green. Now you can see Mairead C & Eabha in Blacks Dark Blue & Susan being the only one in bright Blue Silverish White I'd say. :P

Our  friend  from  France RFCW  has   his  own   way  of  expressing  himself  in  English. I  think  he  meant  "FLIP-FLOPPED"   the  order   of  the  set  list.  Not  CW  has  flopped  success  wise.   8)  Or  perhaps  he  meant that the   vocalists  are  different than  4  years  ago.   (flip-flopped)

:D flipped is probably the term and not flopped.
Like Susan is in Lisa L's green dress now!
Susan is next in line after Lisa for a different dress shade from the two other soloists.

I didn't feel flopped was a downward thing.
CW since its beginning has never flip flopped or flopped!!!!!!
Thank's for the update!

A few very interesting notes:

1. The dresses they wore for the Voice of Angels tour in Japan were the same ones they wore in North America (not the same ones as the 3Arena DVD / PBS special).

2. The 2018 tour is apparently the Homecoming tour!
http://foxcitiespac.com/events-tickets/tickets/events/celtic-woman-homecoming-tour/celtic-woman-homecoming-tour

I wonder if the DVD will be called Voices of Angels or Homecoming...

I guess we'll find out in a couple of months.

Homecoming for Dublin 3Arena but not the show.
Its too fitted for VOA.
Its not a reunion show

How about
Celtic Woman Voices Of Angels
Live at Their Homecoming to Ireland at the 3Arena!

Usually the show dresses are the Best
Although the Tour Dresses for VOA are too phenomenal not to be on the DVD especially the 1st Half Ones!!!
Just like the Tenth Anniversary were Amazing as well.
At least we have pictures on the CD Album!
I am alright about the Special ones looks like this is the same thing from IOH tour to SFTH except that I loved the SFTH dresses equally to those from IOH tour! This is Different!!=

https://www.celticwoman.com/news/16-year-old-anabel-sweeney-wowed-audiences-with-her-heart-felt-rendition-of-fields-of-gold-at-the-celtic-woman-3arena-show-/

The DVD is called "Homecoming – Live in Ireland" (rather than Voices of Angels)!

It makes sense since they returned to their home city of Dublin for the DVD recording.

The PBS special expected to release in December and the DVD early next year.

Celtic Woman did an interview with Rory O'Connor at The Irish Embassy in London ahead of their gig at the London Palladium. I'm posting it in the Homecoming special / DVD topic because it has footage from the 3Arena show (aka the DVD recording):

https://youtu.be/RCydOerQhIk

The interview itself covers well-treaded questions that they've answered in a lot of previous interviews.

The part where they talk about their reactions to the news Destiny Grammy nomination was great!

Tara is sooo adaorable!

Rory: "... and the audiences around the world love you too."
Tara: "Oh, I don't know about that."

Trust me, Tara, we love you!

The footage looks and sounds AMAZING! Those dresses really pop on camera!

I wonder how/why the Decisions are made for the dresses mostly the colors. This is one of the specials where one or two members don't change drastically as Tara & Susan do! I loved the theming of the VOA dresses.

Looking at the VOA songs do you agree those are CW's most important songs? Would you add any more? Seems within 12 years we only recall 5 era's (not including holiday specials). ...

The Homecoming PBS special is airing on my local station on Nov 27 and Dec 8, 2017.

So far no response from any of the PBS stations I contacted about M+Gs and no pledge gifts for CW M+Gs on any of the PBS sites for nearby stations I checked.

I'll start checking daily in mid-November and if/when I see a PBS station post any M+G, I'm going to call all the others in range.

AWESOME! Nooow just a couple more questions I'm waiting to have answered.

1. When does the DVD come out?
2. Is there a US "Sing With Celtic Woman" competition for next year?

Both good questions.

Best guess on the DVD is January (might vary by region).

I believe the overall winner of the European competition gets to perform at one show in the US. I suspect if there are sing with angels competitions for the US tour, they would be announced closer to the start of the tour, but if I see anything, I'll definitely let you know.

My local PBS station got back to me and said they would have tickets to one of the Celtic Woman shows, but they won't be M+G tickets. I'm not overly surprised. They don't tend to have M+Gs at shows in Canada.

So as I anticipated, I will be looking for a second show on the tour that has a M+G. So far, no answer from the other stations in the area. Most of them are airing the special between Nov 25-27, although the out of market venue that would be most ideal for a M+G for me doesn't have it listed yet. Typical. Considering the turnout to that venue last time, I'm surprised they're coming back at all, honestly. If they had a M+G it would end up including a rather significant portion of the audience in attendance, I'm afraid.

I guess if one of the other PBS stations in the area offers a M+G when they air the special, I'll just get the first one I can, I suppose, and if there's a closer one available later, c'est la vie.  :)

Here it is!

The full sizzle reel for Homecoming!!!

https://www.facebook.com/celticwoman/videos/10155893433742838/

It looks and sounds amazing!!!  Was there ever any doubt?

Seems like they did a good job of cleaning up all the technical issues that happened during the taping.

There are some spots where the transitions could have been done more smoothly, but it's really minor and certainly forgivable.

One week until it starts airing on PBS stations!!!

I'm a little bit disappointed by this Sizzle Reel. My problem with it is that the clips of the songs are like 3 seconds at most. You can't really get a feel for the show, be it the audio or visual aspect. All the previous ones showed anywhere from 15 to 30 for each song.

Still, I am REALLY looking forward to the show!

Tom needs to save up to come to R.I. for a Providence show. Not only is the venue spectacular but the "bus n`greets" are pretty much assured as the stage door exit comes out on to Richmond street...just a dinky side street where the busses are parked. It`s sooooo cool to walk with the ladies to the busses and chat with them at the same time.....they`re all SUPER sweet.

Confirmed.

My PBS station is offering both a Homecoming CD and DVD (separately or as a bundle).

It'll be interesting to see what's on there. A combination of live tracks, Water Under the Bridge, and tracks previously released on VoA? They haven't recorded any other new songs unless they did it in secret.

P.S.  The 2018 Homecoming calendar is available from the Celtic Woman store now. I'm hoping they send me a copy with the Christmas CD I ordered through their site, but if not, I suppose I'll just order something else ( there must be something on there I don't have yet  :D ).

P.P.S.   My local PBS station already told me the don't have M+G tickets this time. My second closest PBS station just posted their pledge gifts for Homecoming (CD/DVD) but there are no tickets listed, so I'm just going to call them and find out if / when they're planning to offer M+G tickets.

Woohoo!

After getting super-expensive M+G tickets through PBS, I decided getting the DVD for 5+ times its cost through PBS was not practical.

I've got a pre-order for the CD and DVD on Amazon. In Canada, they didn't have the "deluxe" CD/DVD bundle on Amazon, so I just got them separately. I prefer having CDs and DVDs separated anyways. I just hope the "deluxe" bundle doesn't have some bonus tracks or content that I don't get by getting them separately. Lol.

The Homecoming DVD and live album are available for pre-order from the Celtic Woman site now with special bundles!

The CD and DVD can either be ordered separately, or together in a single jewel case.

The Target version of the live CD apparently has 2 exclusive bonus tracks:

Celtic Woman's latest release, Homecoming – Live in Ireland is a live CD and DVD,  recorded in Dublin, Ireland and is set for broadcast on PBS stations nationwide in December 2017.
Available in digital and CD formats as well as a special Target exclusive CD featuring two bonus tracks, Homecoming – Live in Ireland features songs that span Celtic Woman's career.

Does anyone know why the track listing for the Homecoming CD is different on the Celtic Woman site than it is pretty much everywhere else (Apple Music, Amazon, PBS shop, ...)?

Track list from most places:

1 Homecoming Lament (Live 2017)
2 Mo Ghile Mear (My Gallant Star) (Live 2017)
3 My Heart Will Go On (Live 2017)
4 Walk Beside Me (Live 2017)
5 Dúlamán (Live 2017)
6 Danny Boy (Live 2017)
7 For The Love Of A Princess (Live 2017)
8 Fields Of Gold (Live 2017)
9 Westering Home (Live 2017)
10 Water Under The Bridge (Live 2017)
11 The Voice (Live 2017)
12 Ard Uí Chuain/Sadhbh Ní Bhruinneallaigh (Live 2017)
13 You Raise Me Up (Live 2017)
14 The Kesh Inn (Live 2017)
15 Téir Abhaile Riú (Live 2017)
16 The Parting Glass (Live 2017)

Target Exclusive:

17 Time to Say Goodbye
18 Amazing Grace

Track List from Celtic Woman site:

1. Homecoming Lament
2. Mo Ghile Mear
3. My Heart Will Go On
4. Across The World
5. Walk Beside Me
6. Dúlaman
7. Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears
8. Danny Boy
9. Westering Home
10. Amazing Grace
11. For the Love of a Princess
12. Ave Maria
13. Water Under The Bridge
14. The Voice
15. Ard Ui Chuain / Sadhbh Ni Bhruinnealaigh
16. Time to Say Goodbye
17. You Raise Me Up
18. The Kesh Inn
19. The Parting Glass

I'm not sure why the Celtic Woman site lists the CD with more tracks or in a different order than the other places. It's possible that the digital album is different than the physical CD.

There may also be regional differences.

Spanish Wikipedia lists the common track list as the digital version and the CelticWoman.com track list as the CD version. But there aren't references on that page yet, so I don't know where that info came from or if it's correct.

But based on the fact that there are 2 songs that are believed to be Target-exclusive songs listed on the Celtic Woman site's track listing, I'm thinking the listing on the Celtic Woman site might be wrong. Lol. Either that or a lot of other places have the wrong info.

I guess we'll have a better idea when it starts releasing officially on January 26.

Anyways, I used the most common track listing to update the Wikipedia page, which is still very much a work in progress.

Hmmm... that is strange. But the track list on the CW site isn't right because I have the CD myself and it matches the other lists.

Made more sense in my.opinion "Water Under The Bridge" on CD be one of the bonuses with Westering Home as second.

Time To Say Goodbye is not new to be exclusive and Amazing Grace was already for the VOA Album!

Oh My is it me or is this now the longest title for a track by CW..*
SaNiBhruin is my short vote title as much needed than TAR!

Excellent thought. I'll keep an eye out ... as well as asking some people I know to pick it up if they go to the US, because that will be cheaper than anything I get shipped from the US.

There are...

Just a question of cost. After exchange rate and shipping, it would basically be $40 for the 2 bonus songs that are live tracks which, if worse comes to worse, I can probably extract from the DVD myself.

I have to start saving up so I can go fly to see CaraNua if they do another show. I desperately want to see them.

I could always wait until March and if there's any copies of the target-exclusive left by then, I can grab one when I go see Chloë.

I was ready myself for the release date, to head to Target so I eventually was able went to go on Thursday the next day,
but the self had nothing under new release section nor no sign with Celtic Woman.

I don't know if it's not yet arrived for some places. Does it supposed to be when a release date is announced X.
Usually Best Buy doesn't have it, could be this time it's flipped.
I may wait to go Target again this week and then if not order the autographed one on Target.com

I can listen to the clips now

I still have not seen the Special! ;D

As for the same songs on the CD as VOA is the Quality better on the VOA album are these
live DVD tracks!!

The tracks on Homecoming are all very good. They are arrangements from the Voices of Angels tour, which are similar in most cases to the Voices of Angels album. I'm working on a review that includes comparisons of some of the tracks, but that might take a while to get posted. The major difference in tracks on both albums is For the Love of a Princess. Homecoming uses the VoA tour version, which, in my opinion has an even more breathtaking ending that the VoA album version. Most of the other songs on both albums have subtle differences (more of a haunting echo on a few of the version from Homecoming).

I love it so much!!!! <3

I received the Target signature copy Friday morning. Listened to it for 2 days. I love the live tracks. This is a first for Celtic Woman to release an all Live album. In past it was one or two tracks Live.

Only 2 songs missing I wished they included in the DVD special and CD, Nil Se'n La and Orinoco Flow. Both of them were new versions on this last tour.

Does anyone else notice the songs originally from the VOA cd sound the same on Homecoming? I know they don't lip sync, so they must have put the vocals from the studio recording over the live one's. Why do they do that?

Interesting.

Dulaman and Danny Boy were definitely different vocal tracks.

The arrangements are very similar because Homecoming was of course part of the Voices of Angels of tour. They probably sound so similar when singing them because they performed those songs many times during the tour, sound checks, rehearsals, etc. Repeatable precision is part of their style (one of the reasons why the harmony works so well).

We know there were a few technical issues during the 3Arena show (mostly lighting, but some audio as well), so I suppose it's possible they grafted in some VoA album tracks in some places.

I'll have to dissect the tracks at some point to see if there were any overlays.

It's been like this for years, we still don't know why XD I suppose it's to offer the best experience to the listener in case of little (and human) mistakes during the live performances. All of the DVDs have a couple of songs which you can tell are 'really' live (The Blessing on ANJ DVD, for instance, is clearly different from the CD) and for the rest we hear the studio version.

After listening to the CD myself, I have to say I don't think this was something we really needed. I think that instead of "Homecoming" it would have made more sense to make a "Voices of Angels" DVD without releasing a 'live' album which basically is VOA with a couple of new tracks, a couple of differences in the arrangements and the clapping and cheering sounds of the audience. And the two songs with Anabel, which are OK but not much to my taste.

I would have preferred, maybe, to have an EP with the studio versions of the new tracks.

I think CW needs to stop re-inventing the material they perform and focusing on the production of new or unreleased songs. Destiny was a breath of fresh air in that sense (even though it also had old songs re-arranged) and Believe and Songs From The Heart were also full of new material for the fans. That is why I didn't like Emerald, because it was all known stuff and so is Homecoming (with a few exceptions). Voices of Angels also had old material but at least all the arrangements were brand new.

As I said, IMHO CW needs to focus on new material. There's room for the fan-favourites on tour, I mean, the bloody Danny Boy and You Raise me Up and Orinoco Flow have been on tour for the last twelve years  ;D And they've been recorded and/or released so many times by now. Dulaman has been recorded five times XD I really think the CDs should be made for new songs, that way each CD would correspond to a DVD with new material AND old favourites.

Just sayin'  :D

(by the way, my rant is not about the girls, they always do an amazing job when it comes to their craft. It's just about the choice of the material, which I think could become boring especially for them, at a certain point)

Title: Re: Homecoming special / DVD
Post by: CWazyTom on January 28, 2018, 12:30PM
I don't think they get the same return they used to, on tours or even on new albums.

They may need the revenue from the higher frequency of albums (retreads though some of them are).

I do agree that I would prefer they do a lot more new material. There's a vast amount of great Irish traditional and contemporary songs they haven't done yet.

I wonder if part of the reason they retread material a lot more these days is because they're afraid if they change too much from what the Classic Celtic Woman fan base is used to (in personnel, songs, and they way they are arranged), people might lose interest. Personally, I think it's quite the opposite and fans would love to hear new stuff.

Another thing we have to keep in mind is that not everyone got Voices of Angels and 'new' releases have better sales rates than old albums. While I like the idea of an EP, a full-length album sells better, especially for the fans that didn't get the Voices of Angels album.

A lot of groups do a lot of retreads. Yanni is an example that comes to mind, who released practically nothing but the exact same recordings over and over again on one compilation album after another for 14 consecutive years.  ::)

I don't think I would ever get bored of Celtic Woman. I love them too much. <3

I do think the next album has to be something different or it could be trouble.

Re: why they sometimes overlay studio tracks over the live ones... Celtic Woman is one of the very few groups that I know of that often sound as good (if not better) live as in the studio. But they're not perfect, even though there are large portions of the fan base that expect them to be. A New Journey and Songs from the Heart were soooooooooooo good that fans just grew to expect perfection every time. If they put out a pure live album, I'm sure people would start busting out the old "it's not the same" and "the old singers were better" complaints and turn other fans off of the group. It's sad to say it, but the fan base that's stuck in the group's golden days, while it's sustaining the group, may also be what's holding this current group back now.

Maybe that's just me.

What are your thoughts?

Title: Re: Homecoming special / DVD
Post by: rfcw on January 28, 2018, 01:15PM
For me here is how I see it:
As much as I'm so happy for Voices Of Angel's, having the same even though it's live doesn't sound live still. I notice what I love that makes the songs a bit new is the tour instrumentals you can tell on the trailer for Homecoming at the shot of Eabha during Westering Home a powerful pan or Asian boing to the climax the last chorus!

For the original golden group had they had a live tour album say Isle Of Hope CD & or DVD it would nock the socks off everyone knowing the girls were so perfect even better live at times which is why I love spend more time listening to tour YouTube clips than the cds for powerness!

Here's what should been better for my opinion.
Isle Of Hope Tour LIVE!
Song's From The Heart
Believe
Home For Christmas 2013
10th Anniversary Tour X
Destiny
Voice's Of Angel's- A Homecoming Back to Ireland Live

A Tenth Anniversary X album instead of Emerald would be more special more new, more iconic, more memorable. The fan favorites sung by Meav, Lynn, Alex be different because instead it would release Lynn's Dulaman that was as important who cares if they say she sounds like Meav. The Voice - Alex, Amazing Grace- Meav 1st Time! Susan- Isle Of Hope or Caledonia piano.
Using Susan do Lisa Kelly's same version of The Voice and Caledonia makes Emerald boring or a loss sign of Lisa K. Alex would be different because its an anniversary and Alex trademarked to the song is fairer next in line before Susan.
I still crave Alex Dulaman solo even though it kind of came true for Caranua now.. Lynn's Scarborough Fair was Epic! Hearing or watching Tar, Nil Sen La, Amazing Grace, Orinoco Flow with Meav, Lynn, Alex and with the current lineup Susan and Mairead C was so interesting and yet re-freshing!! Yes Lisa L was amazing on Emerald, its the only way to hear Lisa, Chloe and Susan together but the arrangements are blah same as old albums. Having former members who've never sung some songs or with pairing their voices with other CW girls is refreshingly genius to cw success forward.

Emerald is a skip for me whereas Voices Of Angels at least is not.

Celtic Thunder is going on releasing everything, they have an X Anniversary tour release that CW neglected.
Destiny is great for the next chapter of CW
If Decade or X Tenth Anniversary didn't happen because of Emerald then that sucks and if they didn't do it because of Chloe or Lisa K not there no excuse to not.*

The major difference now with Homecoming & Voice's Of Angels with Song's from The Heart & Isle of Hope is there was no CD for Isle Of Hope plus SFTH became the Album for Isle of Hope on the new tracks. Emerald looks like what Homecoming is now except Emerald is better because it was the first fan favorite combo other than the Decade special? Homecoming comes to a shock because Voices Of Angels came just before.Sfth carried Isle Of Hope. I thought Homecoming could been a DVD only with the CD be the new songs with Parting Glass, Westering Home, Orinoco Flow and Water Under The Bridge not on VOA!

What are your thoughts? ...

Title: Re: Homecoming special / DVD
Post by: CWazyTom on January 28, 2018, 03:16PM
I definitely agree there should have been a 10th Anniversary DVD and an album with the 10th Anniversary Tour singers.

That would have been epic!

I was a little surprised when they announced they were releasing a live CD along with the Homecoming DVD given there was so much overlap with the Voices of Angels CD. I suspect it might have been a last-minute decision. "Hey these live tracks sound really good and not everyone plays DVDs. Maybe the people that won't get the DVD would still appreciate a way to hear the tracks. Plus, we could make some more money so we can keep the tours going."

I don't think the Homecoming album will do nearly as well as Voices of Angels because there's so much overlap.

But would it be better to not release an accompanying album at all? For people in the fan base that are getting tired of the retreads, maybe. But from a financial standpoint? It probably makes sense to release every album they can.

But that said, I think with Emerald, Decade, Voices of Angels, The Best of Christmas, and Homecoming all being essentially re-releases or re-recordings, to do another retread next time would be dangerous.

They could to do a sequel to Destiny perhaps, with all new songs.

They could call it "Destiny's Child."  :D  :D  :D  :D

This is basically the same as Emerald except better for a DVD with the New version performances! Emerald was great but an Anniversary Special would of increased CW level. It's still great for an overview of CW past four specials in 1 cd, 1 DVD and we see Chloe the Star here as an original whereas Believe felt more Lisa K as being her last and it being featured in Atlanta!
Emerald took the part of Anniversary X and chances of a Greatest Journey Part II.

I do love the one name titled themes. My idea for the next one be this:
Believe 2011
Destiny 2016
Dream 2018

Amazon.co.uk (although it was a third party who offered it (Mmglobal3, to be precise). Received it today, watched it almost right away, and was, as usual, blown away. There is a lot that pleased me. For example, the final flourish Tara gave on "For the Love of a Princess". James Horner would have been proud.

I Don't have the DVD, nor have I seen the PBS Special either I found it once on my tv but it was at the end with the credits. :D
Now they are starting to post the full show on youtube.

I love it but there are a lot of switch ups to different camera views very fast which makes it a bit dizzy :-X
especially on beautiful songs where it should be soaring and relaxing breathtaking.

It goes with the theme and title Homecoming, but this a very dark stage to watch even darker than
Emerald. I guess I'm so used to Voice's Of Angel's how beautiful it was from the tv screens, and the dresses.
Nothing wrong with the Homecoming Dresses.

The tours that are so beautiful aren't made to DVD.
I would of done a Voice's Of Angel's DVD and then a Homecoming DVD with songs like featured on this Homecoming Tour! ;)

Voice's Of Angel's songs were worth a new special similar to SFTH, ANJ etc
If the venue was too expensive, do a bright beautiful Blue, White, Angel like color HFC style Dublin Stage.
Like Home For Christmas which the set was so beautiful.

Then do Homecoming just like an Emerald Gems Special with the new songs like Homeland etc. :)

In France, on video, we have Emerald, Destiny, A Christmas Celebration, Homecoming, and, as individual videos (you have to buy each song separately), Songs from the Heart. You can also get, in the podcast list, Celtic Woman : A New Journey (they say it's the first concert, but I checked) and Believe. But in the albums, Songs from the Heart and Believe are still not there, which means that France still can't get the songs that are on the "European" versions of said albums. Shame.

Water Under the Bridge is not on the DVD ( at least not on the edition I have  ;) ) and not in the PBS special.

I suspect it was performed live at the 3Arena (it's on the Homecoming CD) but was cut from the DVD because there was already too many awesome songs on there, or maybe due to rights issues, the camera shots didn't work out, etc...

Unofficial set list from the 3Arena show:
