There's 3 separate competitions:

1)
One singer for 3Arena show (VoA PBS special / DVD) in Dublin on Sept 2. Could be a guest singer for a few of the songs (ie. Rebecca Winckworth's role or Ooonagh's role in Destiny) or could be a choir/backing role.

2)
Competition to sing at one of the UK tour shows. It's not clear if all 7 would be at the same show, or if there would be 1 contest winner at each of 7 venues on the UK tour.

3)
One of the winners of competition #2 will then be chosen to travel to the USA on an all-expenses paid trip to star alongside Celtic Woman at one of their iconic 2018 shows.

Since each competition winner potentially sings in only 1 or 2 shows, I don't think it's a competition to replace one of the girls or add a 5th girl to the regular lineup (at least not on the rest of the VoA tour or 2018 tour). But, I'm not certain if it's a guest role or a choir backing role.

Are men allowed to take part in this competition as well?

I stopped reading the fine print thoroughly when it said it was limited to Ireland/UK residents, since that ruled out all my North American singer friends for this particular competition.

The restrictions from the Ireland show are "All applicants must be over 14 years of age and must be resident of the island of Ireland." I didn't see anything that excluded anyone by gender.

That's one of the things that leads me to believe it's a choir / backing role. I suppose it's possible they could have a male guest lead singer for a few songs, but that would go against the tradition of the group.
