Title: The Mermaid sounds familiar
Post by: CWazyTom on April 28, 2018, 06:42PM
This song (performed by Meav with Anuna) sounds very familiar.

I could swear I've heard it somewhere else or performed by someone else, but I can't figure out where else I've heard this.

It's a traditional song so it's no doubt been performed by many people over the years. But aside from Celtic Woman and some related performers, I don't listen to that much Irish music. So I'm guessing I've heard a different version of it performed by one of our Celtic ladies at some point.

Did Meav perform a different version of it besides the Anuna version?

Did any of our other Celtic ladies cover this, perhaps under a different song title?

Are there any other songs that might that share this melody?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETXrgeORlRQ     Here is Deirdre from  one of her turns with Lord Of The Dance.   The Irish gaelic  is   for this song "The Mermaid"   is  "An  Mhaighdean Mhara"

Of course, both Meav and Deirdre have  LOTD  in common.    Deirdre also sings  lovely Marble Halls  like Meav  too.  :)

Aha!

Orla sang it on The Water Is Wide as well, although the Deirdre cover was the one I was trying to remember.  ;)

Well, it's a title that has been covered quite a few times. The most famous version is of course Ann Buckley's in Feet of Flames, but it has also been sung by Oaife Ni Feraigh in her first album.

Ann's version :

Aoife's version :

And Altan's, just for fun :

And I dream that one day, CW adds it to its songs.

Thanks!

I've seen Ann's version before. Didn't remember what it was called to find it though.  ;D

I very much like Deirdre's version.

Yes, a Celtic Woman cover of this song would sound exceedingly beautiful.

It bears some melodic similarity to Crucán Na Bpáiste. They're both are sorrowful songs as well. I'd be happy to hear either them performed by our lovely ladies. Personally I think it's unlikely we'll hear Crucán Na Bpáiste in a Celtic Woman. As beautiful as it is, it isn't the most uplifting song. An Mhaighdean Mhara might work though.

An Eabha or Mairead Carlin solo would work well, although I'm partial to harmony.  :D

And now Eabha (at least a part of the song, during her warm-up):
