Title: For Christians (and other intristed parties)
Post by: Celtic Lass on May 14, 2007, 12:11PM
I was in church this Saturday and for closing hymn we sang I Cannot Tell Why. Well our pastor sermon was on wether protestints should celebrate St. Patricks Day. Anyway, he had a lady play the flute along with the organ for this closing hymn. The funny thing is the music to it was Danny Boy !!!!! I could hardly believe it! I went home and checked the music and it is the original music to the hymn! Has anyone else heard this hymn before? It was so wired! ??? ;D

Oh, by the way, it was written by W. Y. Fullerton and it is an Irish melody arr. by John Barnard.

Anderpaw - You might be able to find it on the web. I'll have to see what I can scratch up.

vanni9283 - it is in The Seventh-Day Adventist Hymnal and I suppose some others.

Like I said, I'll see if I can find something on the web and get back to you guys on that. :)

The melody for the hymn and for Danny Boy was originally called Londonderry Air, an anthem of Northern Ireland. Here are the lyrics for "I cannot tell", written by William Young Fullerton.

I cannot tell why He Whom angels worship,
Should set His love upon the sons of men,
Or why, as Shepherd, He should seek the wanderers,
To bring them back, they know not how or when.
But this I know, that He was born of Mary
When Bethlehem’s manger was His only home,
And that He lived at Nazareth and labored,
And so the Savior, Savior of the world is come.

I cannot tell how silently He suffered,
As with His peace He graced this place of tears,
Or how His heart upon the cross was broken,
The crown of pain to three and thirty years.
But this I know, He heals the brokenhearted,
And stays our sin, and calms our lurking fear,
And lifts the burden from the heavy laden,
For yet the Savior, Savior of the world is here.

I cannot tell how He will win the nations,
How He will claim His earthly heritage,
How satisfy the needs and aspirations
Of East and West, of sinner and of sage.
But this I know, all flesh shall see His glory,
And He shall reap the harvest He has sown,
And some glad day His sun shall shine in splendour
When He the Savior, Savior of the world is known.

I cannot tell how all the lands shall worship,
When, at His bidding, every storm is stilled,
Or who can say how great the jubilation
When all the hearts of men with love are filled.
But this I know, the skies will thrill with rapture,
And myriad, myriad human voices sing,
And earth to Heaven, and Heaven to earth, will answer:
At last the Savior, Savior of the world is King

I just found this site that has music with the words that OldFatGuy just gave us. Here it is:

http://www.oremus.org/hymnal/i/i029.html

It is a little faster then Danny Boy though.

The tune is in a Lutheran hymnal. It is under the lyrics/title of "O Christ the Same". We sing that every so often in our church.

The name of the hymnal is "With One Voice".

Not to get off topic, but in the Lutheran church that I go to we've "celebrated"  St. Patrick's Day. That is we've sung a hymn that he either composed the tune or lyrics for and the sermon was about his contribution to the overall Christian church.

I was in church this Saturday and for closing hymn we sang I Cannot Tell Why. Well our pastor sermon was on wether protestints should celebrate St. Patricks Day.

Beautiful lyrics. I've never heard it before.

*going off topic* I was looking through that site and a song popped in my head. It's called "Down to the River to Pray" it was on O Brother, Where Art Thou. That would be a cool song for the Ladies to sing a cappella.
*okay, i'm finished being off topic*

St. Patrick's is a Celtic holiday, Catholic or Protestant. Shouldn't matter the religion.

Look how many "irish" there are on St. Patirick's Day in the US. I know the Irish get around, but . . .

Hmmmm....none of the Moravian Hymnals have it....the Moravians like to march to the beat of their own drummer and make up their own songs and traditions...which in this situation is bad....because I like the song has a stunning lyric....(Perhaps I can find music and have my childrens choir sing it)....

HUZZAH!

If you ever come down here to Orlando, we will go to Mass together.....
you can meet our lovely Irish Priest, and hear some fabulous music.

The melody for the hymn and for Danny Boy was originally called Londonderry Air, an anthem of Northern Ireland.

It was never considered a traditional Irish melody.
Around 100 songs & hymns have been set to it.
I have seen it described as a "reel" which of course it is not.
I know many Irish singers and bands who will not sing "Danny Boy", and yet it is one of the most requested.

I'm a clergy offspring myself. My late dad was an ELCA pastor. I know he would have loved CW. My mom loves the CW Christmas DVD I gave her.
