Title: Celtic Music Saturation?
Post by: Cash on June 11, 2007, 06:06PM
Ok so we have Christmas in July coming, plus solo efforts from CWs (Lisa's DVD we hope  ;D), Anuna touring and coming to the PBS pledge drive in the fall, Celtic Man, etc. Also, in the Sunday paper's "Parade" I read that sfter Charlotte Church has her baby she plans a new CD and to return to her TV show.  So, that raises the question: Can too much of a good thing end up being bad? Is it too much? I think its only natural that others try to jump on the bandwagon of the success. Its only human. I am sort of glad its happening. A lot of good music coming. BUT, again, when does it become too much? If there is a lot out there, does it cheapen its value?

Remember the British Invasion? Both good and not so good came out of that. I think we're still trying to figure out just what happened then.

It sure does empty wallets!

with so much music around, you need to sort out the good and the bad according to your tastes. thats how i see it. the world is full of music so you pick out what you like and ignore the rest

I don't think it is a bad thing.  In my car it is always either CW, Clannad, Orlagh, Altan or Van Morrison playing.  Now with the new Celtic Man coming out in the near future, more celtic music to enjoy.  At home and at school I am listening to Accuradio/Radio Celt on the radio and have learned about several Celtic groups from there.  No, there is never too much of a good thing in my opinion!

Personally, when people ask me that inevitable question, "What kind of music do you like?" I answer, "Celtic/Irish."  If it doesn't come from Ireland, I don't really want to hear it  ;)

You should span out a little and listen to some Scottish music.  Caledonia, as you know is about Scotland and it is not bad as done by the original singer/composer Dougie MacLean and another Scottish group Old Blind Dogs is pretty good too.  You might also want to give a listen to Bonnie Rideout, who is a marvelous Scottish fiddler.

I can vouch for Bonnie Rideout.  I saw her in concert and I have her Christmas CD.  She's very talented!

I don't think it will become one of those "too much of a good thing" times because you may not like everything that's coming out. Like ferngully said, you have to sort it for yourself.

When people ask me what music I like, I find it hard to answer, since I like a bit of nearly everything.

Ok, I meant Scottish music too.  But I thought Caledonia was about Ireland....

Caledonia is an ancient name for Scotland

I for one am quite glad to see lots of good-quality genuine Celtic music acts out & about these days. :)

By "genuine" I mean that sometimes "exotic"-sounding "mood music" is dubbed "Celtic" whether or not it has any connection to the genuine Celtic traditions.

Fortunately, Celtic Woman is giving the world a refresher course! ;) (To which I should probably add that David Downes' arrangements & original works certainly demonstrate — in case there was any doubt ;) — how home-grown Irish music not only remains a living tradition, but also still leaves much room for originality & modern interperetations. ...Oh, & same goes for Loreena McKennit. 8) )

When you get a chance Thistle, listen to "Caledonia" on youtube by Dougie MacLean.  He wrote it.  It has become the unofficial national anthem of Scotland.  I think you'll like it.  Lisa does a wonderful job on it, I have to say but I kinda like Dougie's the best!

Thanks for posting the link Rich, I'm a nincompoop when it comes to technology! ::)    I love Lisa's version but when I hear Dougie sing it, I actually get goosebumps.  Maybe it's my husband's Scottish connection, not sure.  Thanks again!  ;)

Well, I didn't get goosebumps, but Dear God it was good!

Perhaps the goosebumps occur because he wrote it, and you can feel what he must have been thinking of when he wrote it.  His love of Scotland.

BTW, I often get goosebumps when I listen to Lisa's version too!   ;)

I knew Dougie McLean's version before I heard Lisa's, actually!  I now listen to Lisa's version a lot more than the original, but I still listen to Dougie's once in a while and I love them both!
