I don't think I'd want to hear them sing "Bohemian Rhapsody", "We Will Rock You", or "We Are the Champions"  by Queen.

Although the middle part of Bohemian would be entertaining - Oh mamma mia, mamma mia let me go!

"Sk8ter Boy" by Avril Lavigne would probably not work.

I can't see them singing anything by KISS, either (and I DEFINITELY wouldn't recommend the makeup!  :D )

I wonder if they were reading this thread what they would think... probably that we had way too much time on our hands... or I bet they could come up with a list.  How about "Another one bits the dust?"... who sang that song?.... Or worse... the "Theme from Gilligan's Island!"... har har!!!!   ::) ::) ::)

Queen sang "Another One Bites The Dust" so No Freddy Mercury songs for the girls.

Achy Breaky Heart wouldn't do too well either.

Good point. The biggest gap in logic, or sense, or whatever you call this  sort of thing happened in Star Trek :The Next Generation. One show had them going into the neutral zone to find out what the evil devious romulans were up to. Of course it was a trap, and invisible romulan ships suddenly appeared. BUT the good guys took invisible klingon ships in with them as back up, and they saved the day. So, if they had invisible ships at their disposal, why take the non-invisible ship in in the first place? Just send the invisible ones in.

Sorry, got off topic...

If not for the courage of the fearless crew, the Minnow would be lost, the Minnow would be lost   :D

Lets hope she doesn't read this and send those muscular women from her one video with the Mr. T hair cuts after you. To be honest, I would be scared if I saw them comin' after me. As that one line from Monty Python's Holy Grail goes " Run Away!  Run Away!"

My Heart Will Go On - Celine Dion

Really? This is one that I would think has some good potential.

The problems I have with this song was:

  • Extremely hyped and overplayed-to-death on the radio and TV. At the height of the popularity of Titanic, big chances I would hear that wrentched song the first thing I turn the radio on or tune into another station.
  • Didn't care for James Horner's overly-slick production. It sounded too prententious and fake. Had he used a real, full-backing orchestra, maybe the song would've stand a chance.
  • The covers that followed it. Kenny G. Andre Rieu. A New Found Glory, for God's sakes.
  • Celine Dion sang it.

I actually think the song is well arranged and well-written lyrically, I'll concede on that. But the fact that it was sung by a shrill Celine, that it is associated with the most overhyped movie in the history of cinema, and the fact I had to listen to that song on the radio (really, they still play that) at work almost everyday just kills it for me.

While I learned a long time ago to never underestimate David Downes' or CW's ability to transcend or transform any material, if I heard they covering Guns N' Roses "Welcome to the Jungle," I'd be a little concerned.

Oh for sure not the twangy country.

I had a thought of one that might actually be a possiblility for them to sing. How about "Sound of Music"? With all of them singing some kind of harmoney to it. Or just one of the girls. Either way I think it would be good.

The song Summer Fly on Hayley's album:Celtic Treasure sounds like a country song to me.

Then again, she could not make a song sound bad if she tried.

I'm so glad someone else finally mentioned that.  It almost sounds like something Alison Krauss would record.  It has a bit of a bluegrass-y feel to it.

Gee there's quite a long list of songs they should never sing, but it's funny to imagine them singing...

Cotton-Eyed Joe
Shoes (lol that's not even singing)
Yeah!
Smack That
Baby One More Time (or anything by Britney for that matter)
Filthy/Gorgeous
London Bridge
Girlfriend (although I LOVE Avril!)
La La
So Yesterday (or anything by Hillary Duff)
Stayin' Alive
Hollaback Girl
Wannabe (though I like the Spice Girls- they're hot!)
Another Brick In The Wall
Cupid's Chokehold
White & Nerdy

And that's only to name a few. But I have often fantasized about them doing ATTSS...

just think of the film. now that connie fisher has played maria the association is just too annoying in my mind :o besides, some country wouldn't be bad, shania twain has managed to crossover country with pop. there are usually violins in her songs so i'm sure mariead could make a CW country song sound good ;D

"Good King Kong Looked Out" from P.D.Q. Bach's
"A Consort of Choral Christmas Carols"

Good King Kong looked out on his feet
And he saw that they were large.
“Ho, ho,” he said, “we go,” he said,
“To make some tracks in the snow,
Forsooth our feet are very large.”
Squinch, squinch, squinch.

Good King Kong looked out on his nose
And he saw that it was flat.
“Oh, no,” he said, “when we blow,” he said,
“The pitch must not be too low,
The royal nose must not be flat.”
Honk, honk, honk.

Good King Kong looked out on his ears
And his ears he could not see.
“Oh, dear,” he said, “it’s clear,” he said,
“We must see if we can hear,
Because our ears we cannot see.”
Hear, hear, hear.

Good King Kong looked up in the sky
And he saw St. Nick’s red sleigh;
“Ho, ho,” he said, “whadd’ya know,” he said,
“Will you look at that old guy go,” he said,
“Uh, oh, whoa, past us please do not go.
“Yell yells,” he said, “Ring the bells,” he said,
“Though a couple don’t work very well,
Let’s welcome St. Nick and his sleigh.”
Ding, dong, clunk.

Glad you liked my suggestions Ou est?   I agree with most, anything by Michael Jackson would not do...can you see them in a line singing....

"ABC.....simple as l,2,3......" (early Jackson Five song)

Speaking of country though, how about NOT singing "I'm a Little Bit Country, I'm a Little Bit Rock N Roll" by those icons of the past...Donny and Marie?

I don't think they should attempt "If I Had a Hammer." The only version I'm really familiar with is the Peter, Paul and Mary version and, though I think CW could pull off folk music quite well, this is one that just leaves me shuddering at the thought.

It reminds me of a stand up comedian I saw once, a Scottish fellow, and he sang, "If I had a hammer, there'd be no more folk singers."

the only version of that song i've heard, apart from at school, is by the von trapps and its not that great. but their version of some songs are pretty good, 'sound of the round' is good and i can see CW singing it, as well as 'down by the river to pray.' lovely acapella pieces

Hmmm... Since that one was itself a rip-off of "Under Pressure", a David Bowie/Freddie Mercury collaboration, we seem to be saying, once again, that they must stay away from the whole area of Freddy Mercury. (Can't say I disagree, as far as that goes; they're simply on a completely different tack.)

On another angle, as much as I appreciate Lisa, Meav, & Chloe's fellow Dubliner, Phil Lynott, I don't suspect that much Thin Lizzy works with the Celtic Woman format. Even though both drew a degree of inspiration from traditional Irish music, it's basically two different areas of the tradition that don't necessarily mix.

Besides that, I'd likely die of shock if I saw Chloe singing "The Warrior" :o :o :o [/goofiness :D ]
...though Mairead would probably pull off a great fiddle version of the guitar solos from "Emerald". 8)

WOW!!!!!! This is hysterical!!! I think the worst song in the world for CW will be WALK IT OUT! Can you imagine that! Meav, Orla, Lisa, and Hayley doing walk it out, and Mairead does it while playing the fiddle solo. Lol. I agree with alot of people, rap, OFF OF THE LIST!!! And this is also funny, CW singing Barry Manilow. That would be strange, CW in their rows singing At the copa, copacabana. Lol. Definetly NO LILLY ALLEN. Tom Jones is also a no-no.

Meav could be perfect for this song. Hit those extremely high notes, shattering glass, cracking the walls and ceilings, and setting-off car alarms. Awesome.

You know what though, I'd be really curious to know, beyond Chloe enjoying Green Day, just what other different musical genres the girls enjoy whether it's rock, country, alternative, etc. Given that, for example, Mairead's Raining Up album had a little bit of everything in it almost, I would tend to bet we *would* be a bit surprised to find out just what music is playing in their iPods or could be found in their cd collections :)

I don't think they could grunt very well....I think I need to explain the 'grunting' thing, since I doubt the English word means the same as the Dutch. Grunting is when you sing, not with your normal voice, but you kinda rasp the words out. I don't know the right word for this kinda singing......Listen to Epica's Cry for the Moon, and you'll know what I mean.

Hmm, Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley wouldn't work either... though someone mentioned that before.
other songs they should NOT sing: Happy, Saving Jane- Let's Make Love by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, that'd have to be a duet with maybe David or something ;)

What they might pull of: Fireflies, Faith Hill. Mississippi Girl, Faith Hill. Not very Irish, but it would be fun to see them do that!

Not to change the subject but what is it about the Irish and John Denver? I tended to stay in small towns, and in each one I was called on to sing one of his songs. Not that I minded I felt sorry for the people listening. Luckily I grew up going to Orioles games so I knew all the words.

I've got one they shouldn't sing, although the choral arrangement was really kinda cool, which made it even funnier.   :D

The original artist singing Hallelujah was Leonard Cohen, a brilliant Jewish Canadian singer/songwriter who has also penned award winning novels and written a substantial body of (excellent) poetry. He also spent ten years in a Zen Buddhist monastery following a period of severe depression. He's a genius and a movie was put out about him a year or two ago called "I'm Your Man." I highly recommend him to all people into singer/songerwriter types. He's not a technically great singer, but his voice suits his own lyrics perfectly. Anyway, that's my Leonard Cohen rant for the day.

Chris

P.S. The Jeff Buckley version of Hallelujah and a Leonard Cohen version of one of his own songs called If it be Your Will were played at Janine's memorial service. She would have liked that, she was a huge fan.

Thanks, I do remember the local public radio station once played Leonard's original tune back-to-back with Buckley's cover. It is pretty good, though I think Buckley has done this song justice with his, IMO, better vocals.

he's her loving man.

She don't cook mashed potatoes,
she don't cook T-bone steaks,
Don't feed me peanut butter,
she knows that I can't take.

He likes bread and butter,
he likes toast and jam,
That's what his baby feeds him,
he's her loving man.

Got home early one morning,
much to my surprise,
She was eating chicken and dumplings
with some other guy.

No more bread and butter,
no more toast and jam,
I found my baby eating
with some other man

Actually, bluegrass was inspired by the music of immigrants from the British Isles particularly the Scots-Irish immigrants in Appalachia. I think it would be very appropriate for the ladies to try their hand at it. Máiréad would have lots of fun, that's for sure.

I could see Mairead doing Orange Blossom Special!
They definitely should not do any really old country. You know the kind, where everyone sings through their noses! I shudder just thinking about it!

You mean old like original Hank Williams or Patsy Cline?  Or even older than them?  Now that I think of it, the ladies singing some of Patsy Cline's old stuff re-arranged would probably be very lovely. :)

Older, like the A.P. Carter Family. I agree that they might do well on new arrangements of Patsy Cline. Maybe Walking after Midnight for Lisa or Chloe

Cats in the Cradle and Wreck of the Edmund  Fitzgerald.  I also agree with not ACDC, most songs don't work when you change genre.  I still have nightmares after seeing Shaina's version of You Shook Me All Night Long, Celine Dion's attempt wasn't much better.

Santa Baby :P
Now hold on just a second- if they played up the silliness, kinda like how they did with "Let It Snow" I could see it working. I just have the hilarious image in my head of... Alex, hanging all over the piano and singing it to David while the other girls croon the back-up. Oh, and then when Lisa's part comes up, she saunters around and drapes herself over him and playing with his hair... hehehe...
Right, back on topic. I NEVER want to hear any of them singing "Love Changes Everything" from Aspects of Love. That song is just... -shudders-

The Lama song would DEFINITELY be out
NOTHING rap (I mean really...could you see them rapping? I only get disturbing images thinking about that)
Nothing Hannah/Miley nor Miranda Gosgrow (I-Carly) or however you spell it.
Nothing Heavy metal
Nothing Hip-hop
Nothing with too much of the "pop" genre from the 90s.  Although a few of NSync's songs were actually really pretty.
Nothing with a hick feel of country.
Nothing ever sung by Brittney Spears
Nothing Veggie Tales
Nothing sk8er although there are a few songs from SuperChic[k] that are really pretty that would be great to hear them do (like Beauty from Pain)
One song I'd really LIKE to see is "Can't Help Lovin' that Man of Mine" from Showboat.

Breathe by anna nalick

CW singing:
Enter Sandman...lolz
or anything by Weird Al
having Méav sing Ice Ice Baby....ewwie!
or Bennie and the Jets...(well actually that would be really funny!!)
or **shudder** Bohemian Rhapsody (funny song!! but NO)

CW girls are so not Fergalicious!!
and they are never coming BACK IN BLACK!
and YES!! their hips DO LIE!!! so no...
and they don't WANT IT THAT WAY!!
They are NOT single ladies....(and don't really care if they are!!) OR DANCING QUEENS!!!
and they will never KISS YOU THROUGH THE PHONE! UNDER THE BRIDGE!!
Yea..Celtic Woman WILL SURVIVE!! they just won't sing it...
and they really don't care if THE LION SLEEPS TONIGHT...(A-wimoweh, a-wimoweh A-wimoweh, a-wimoweh)

Imagine:
Oh my gosh Lisa look at her butt...  :P

and these two last songs would make me laugh and cry SO HARD if they sang them!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qpPXv7cDzg they don't like salsa (I really don't know if they do or not..)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hy_VlckhYlMand they don't like frogs (again..I really don't know if they do or not)

Fergalicious!!!! OMG this is one of the worst songs i've ever heard! :D Please Mr. Downes NO FERGALICIOUS! I don't know if it would even make any sense for CW to perform this song seeing it's about Fergie. But he could change the lyrics and call the song CWlicious or whatever. Please David just don't do it! :D

Let's see...any repeating, non-ending song
Sorry Sorry (Super Junior)
Everybody Dance Now (expecially if one of them starts to yell "EVERYBODY DANCE NOW!" in the middle of some other song and the rest starts to break dance)

I've said no to the Lama song before!  So its a DEFINITE no.

Another list of mine:

1. Rockstar or pretty much anything Nickleback but "If Everyone Cared" would be a good one.
2. Anything Rap.  I mean really.  Could you really see the girls rapping?   :o
3. Nothing Spice Girls.  Except for maybe Viva forever.
4. Anthing by Superchic[k].  I love the group but they're kinda like the Spice Girls.  Even though Beauty from Pain is one of my ultime favorite songs,  I couldnt stand for the girls to sing anything that sad.  So pretty much NO DEPRESSING SONGS!!!
5. Apples and Bananas.  Or any Barney song or any song from PBS kids.
6. Its a Small World.  Kinda goes without saying why.  WAY to repetitive.

I love their version of Circle of Life! It's wayyyyy different from the version our choir is doing, but it's still amazing. One setback is that I loved it so much I got addicted to hearing it that when our choir started practicing I would start singing her version instead of our's, which is a problem cuzI'm lead singer, but that just goes to prove how amazing it is!!!!!!!!!!!!!  ;D ;D ;D

"The Best Things in Life Are Dirty", or almost anything from "Paint Your Wagon."

I'm  sure  any of our gals would do justice to that song.  And I don't think it's a bad song ( per se ) I actually kind of like it myself.....   I just don't think  the content would be appropriate  for  the Celtic Woman motif.    The song is a little too sexual in nature  and    CW   has always striven   to be  family  oriented.  That's what I meant.    8)

The Pussycat Dolls' "Dontcha." Ok, li'l Lambe is hot enough, but it isn't very CW.
"Whisky In the Jar." It's a folk ballad, but armed robbery just isn't CW's style.  I can imagine Mairead having fun with the tune, though.
"The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face." An oxyhydrogen torch song! But outside CW's G rating.  I can't wait to hear Meav sing it with the Divinas.

"Brain Damage", or anything from the Pink Floyd "Dark Side of the Moon" album.  Come to think of it, the whole album is a single suite.  And while most of it just isn't CW, it does have one of the all-time great exit couplets:
Everything under the sun is in tune,
But the sun is eclipsed by the moon!
The first time I heard that I ran out and bought the CD, even though I didn't yet own a CD player.

OUCH!  I had forgotten that.  I guess I can add "High School, Uh-Oh!"  WTIX in New Orleans (back when it was still top 40) used to have a feature called "the 'tix Bomb of the Week", where they played the worst song that oozed into their slushpile each week.  "High School, Uh-Oh!" by Clyde Ankle was introduced as the Bomb of the YEAR.  I sincerely hope that every copy of the record has been incinerated.

Now, that I wrote, what Andrew Lloyd Webber songs they SHOULD sing, here are those, they should NOT sing:

Twice In Love Every Day
Beauty Underneath
Heaven On Their Minds
King Herod's Song
Cold
Annie Christmas (!!!)
Don Juan Triumphant
Tire Tracks And Broken Hearts
A Kiss Is A Terrible Thing To Waste
I'd Rather Die On My Feet Than Live On My Knees
Try It And See

more won't come up my mind at the moment...^^ btw, I love these songs...

Hey, Big Spender.  I can imagine Lisa Lambe doing this Peggy Lee standard, but it's definitely not a CW song.

A song they SHOULD sing. Not just CW.

It's VERY unfitting for CW, the tpic and generally out of the context of the musical. The song "1963" from ALW's new show Stephen Ward would be a BRILLIANT duet for Lisa L and Susan! Brilliant! Upbeat,c ute, funny, perfect for these two! But very unfitting for CW.

Here is the full song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hWlF4-PlS4
And here is an ALW interview weith a short clip of it in the middle:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3afOUm8u1DM

As I said, nothing for CW, but Lisa L and Susan would make a GREAT job!

And tom Lehrer.  "Poisoning Pigeons in the Park", "The Masochism Tango"...  Although if CW ever records a DVD on April 1, Lehrer did write "The Irish ballad."  Look it up on YouTube.  Ann Murray's performance is even funnier than the original.
I'd originally included "Let's Drop the Big One."  That belongs here, but it's not Lehrer, it's by Randy Newman.

In response to the Elton John songs they should sing (http://www.celticwomanforum.com/index.php?topic=7174.msg1014913#msg1014913), here are some they should better not cover:

The B*tch is Back
Big Dipper
Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting
Levon
Little Jeannie
Crockodile Rock (too confusing, the singing about Suzy ;D )
Part Time Love
I Am Your Robot
Ego
Legal Boys

And I seriously love these songs...
