Finally back!

« on: September 03, 2007, 04:09AM »

I know this isn't really about members helping members, but to me it is about helping people, which is just as good.
In Holland, we have this cancerfoundation. Everyone knows it, and most people are very grnerous at the annual collection for the funds. There was one person, however, who did something different to raise money. Yesterday he got on his bike and, in one day,  rode 100 miles. He started very early, and arrived at 6.30 pm. There were tents, and an audience, and everyone was screaming 'TERRY, TERRY, TERRY,'. ( That's his name). When he arrived, and I found out what he did, I almost started crying. Honestly, how many people would do such a thing, on their own ? I know most people don't consider this to be very special, but to me it was a little miracle. To know someone's willing do to that Smiley

Thank you for telling us about this man's effort.  It shows what individuals can accomplish if they apply themselves to a good cause.

That's a very uplifting story.

The problems of the world, such as cancer, HIV/AIDS, child molestation, poverty, etc...... seem overwhelming.
We would all like to solve those problems, but we know we can't.
But we can all start with one small step, one gesture, one action to bring it to public attention, like Terry did on his bike ride.

When Mother Teresa was asked why she tended to the poor in the gutters of Calcutta, because surely she couldn't hope to cure their ills or the problem of poverty, she said
"That may be true, but I can start by caring for one at a time......"

Jammalot, your story about Terry has inspired me.
I was thinking "I can't take part in the Orlando "Walk for Alzheimers" event this year, I'm too busy".
Well you know what, I'm not too busy. I'm going to do it. I'll get the sponsor forms.

That's the spirit Maggie Grin It's exactly what he was trying to accomplish, to make other people notice that they CAN make a difference, that they really can help Smiley I'd be cheering at the finish for you, if I lived nearby, but now I'll just cheer for you from over here Smiley

Once Mother Theresa was followed by a reporter for one day. At the end of the day as she was washing the feet of a poor man, the reporter said. "I wouldn't do that for a million dollars."

Mother Theresa looked at hom and said. "Neither would I."

Those little books about Mother Teresa are wonderful.....so much wisdom.

I started doing the "Walk for Alzheimers" after my M-I-L died of that dreadful disease.

It's a lovely walk around Lake Eola in the middle of Orlando.

We all have our favorite causes.

When my lovely sister-in-law died of kidney failure at 38 years, I did a sponsored British Army Assault course to enable children on dialysis to have a vacation.
All the ladies I worked with at LWT did it too.
It was a super fun day and raised thousands of $$$$.
Yes, I did ALL the 52 obstacles. I had some US Marines there cheering me on.
I must confess, I had a bit of Military help over the walls and up the nets though....... Wink
