One CWazy Canadian! Chlovër for life!

« on: November 06, 2016, 11:27PM »

There were a number of PBS-related threads, but rather than read through a ton of old posts to find a suitable one, I figured I'd just start a fresh one...

PBS is an interesting entity. Because it's basically a network of local stations that operate independently but under a common banner, it can be very easy to miss great programming.

For someone like me that doesn't watch PBS all that often, I pretty much only find out about cool stuff on PBS if I happen to see it in the guide while the program is already on.

I've missed a lot of Celtic Woman specials and I'm sure a lot of other quality programming too (ie. The Divinas and who knows what else).

I've found that even visiting the site of my local PBS station is inadequate. I inevitably don't find out about things until they've already aired. I'll look for a while and won't see anything interesting. It'll slip my mind for a couple of weeks and poof, something great was on that I never even knew about.

I'm sure I'm not the only one that's been in this situation.

Now, some people are going to think I get what I deserve. Serves me right for not supporting the network that's nurtured Celtic Woman for so many years. Well, you have a point. but regardless, I'm creating this thread in the hopes that if someone notices something interesting on PBS (current or upcoming), they'll give us a heads up. Yes, not every PBS station airs the same things at the same times, but it would be helpful to know and be on the lookout for things of interest.

If I do still happen to miss something and at least I know I've missed it, I have a number of options now that weren't as feasible back when I missed all those Celtic Woman specials:
- I can get 2 PBS stations and have relatives that can get a third PBS station ... it's possibly I could catch an airing on a different station
- I can try to find a showing from an alternate source (ie. the Internet)
- Worse comes to worse if there's something extra awesome and I can't find it or see it elsewhere, I can just buy it after the fact

Anyways, please keep this thread in mind and hopefully it will be helpful down the road, if not for me than for others in forum land.

Thanks!

Hey Tom, I have a quick and easy way to find out what`s on my local PBS stations...or any other stations /networks you`re interested in. Go to Google or Yahoo, type in the call letters of your PBS station followed by "schedule...Zap 2 it"...an easy to read program guide pops up so you can quickly see what`s on that whole day, you can expand to the following day as well. Give it a try.

Eamonn McCrystal, who just finished a tour with Chloë, has a new Christmas special.

It's airing on a large number of PBS stations tonight (Dec 22, 2016).

It's called "The Music of Christmas."

I don't get it on either of the three PBS stations I can tune in to, but I'm sure some of you will be able to enjoy it.  Smiley

So I was just wandering around the guide and noticed my PBS was showing something called "Celtic Roots Live With Nathan Carter" tonight from 8:00 - 9:30 PM.

I thought it sounded interesting so I looked at the description:

Irish singer Nathan Carter performs in Dublin, Ireland where he's joined by Chloë Agnew!!!

Whaaatttttt?

Chloë?

Woooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!

My goodness, if I hadn't have been just poking around the dial I would have missed it.

Gonna see Chloë!!!!

OPB is showing CW in 1 minute -- was not on their schedule before. Smiley Smiley

Not even on the schedule. Argh! That kind of the thing is part of the reason I missed so many of their specials when they actually aired on PBS.
I found something online that quickly shows upcoming TV shows...type in the call letters to your local PBS station , then ZAP2IT.....shows everything that day and for the following days. That`s how I`ve caught HOMECOMING 4 times in 10 days.

That's pretty cool!!!

Celtic Woman: Homecoming is re-airing tomorrow night on my local PBS station!

Check your local listings (or use zap2it to check them).

Nathan Carter has a new special that's airing on many of the PBS stations:

Nathan Carter: Celtic Country

It was recorded at the 3Arena in Dublin.

I don't think Chloë is a guest star this year.

It actually aired last night on my PBS station. I, of course, found out about it today.  Roll Eyes

There was apparently a "special ticket offer" but I'm not sure what it was. I checked the Donation page on my PBS station's website in case they had M+G tickets for Nathan's show I'm going to in December, which does have Chloë as a guest. There weren't any tickets listed, so either it was only available by phoning in or all those tickets are gone.  Sad

I really need a Chloë hug.

Well, I'm going to try stage and greets twice in Dublin, so between that and Nathan's show in December, hopefully one of these stage and greets will finally work out for me. First time for everything, right?

The good news, is the PBS special re-airs for me overnight on Wednesday night, so I can watch it on Thursday and let everyone know how it was.

Nathan Carter's Celtic Country show was good.

Like his previous PBS special (Celtic Roots), this show had a good energy level. The crowd at the 3Arena was really into it, dancing and singing along.

Like Celtic Roots, there was a mix of Irish and country songs. There were quite a few songs that were performed on both this special and the previous one, but for the most part they were good songs. I enjoyed Celtic Roots a bit more, because I was hearing him perform these songs for the first time and because Celtic Roots had Chloë! But this was a fun show. It even had pyro!

There were no tickets offered during the PBS special, just the CD, DVD, and combination of then two.

The hosts did a decent job of promoting Nathan and encouraging people to pledge. My favourite part of the pledge breaks though were the Shout-out to Celtic Woman! One of the hosts noted that PBS helped launch great acts like Celtic Woman. In a separate pledge break, Nathan mentioned his grandmother was a fan of Celtic Woman.

This show is worth watching. His live shows are similar in style, energy, and content too, so if you like the PBS special, check if he's touring in a city near you.
