Notes from the Voices of Angels DVD recording

Here are some notes I've pieced together so far from various reports of the DVD recording.

BTW, if you missed my previous post showing some of the pictures from the show I assembled from the various social media platforms, check it out.  Wink

Set List (unofficial):

Act 1:
1. Mo Ghile Mear
2. My Heart Will Go On
3. Across the World
4. Walk Beside Me
5. Dúlamán
6. She Moved Thru' The Fair
7. Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears
8. Danny Boy
9. Fields of Gold
10. Westering Home
11. Níl Sé'n Lá

Act 2:
... Working on it

Omissions compared to the 2017 Voices of Angels tour:
- Ó Ró Sé do Bheatha Bhaile
- Orinoco Flow (strange, considering they posted a video of them rehearsing it before the show)

Anabel Sweeney:
- The Celtic Woman singer contest winner from Co Waterford, Ireland
- Sang a solo (Fields of Gold)
- Also sang the opening solo part of Westering Home
- She was a bit nervous, but overall, handled herself very well, particularly for her first big live performance
- She was apparently very professional, had great stage presence, and was funny as well

Dresses:

Act 1:
- Susan: Bright blue (she wore it during her dance number as well)
- Éabha: Medium blue
- Mairéad Carlin: Dark purple
- Tara: Pattern
- Anabel: White

Ceili:
... Working on it

Act 2:
- Susan: Red
- Éabha: Dark blue
- Mairéad Carlin: Black
- Tara: Gold

Songs that were particularly well-received:
- For the Love of a Princess
- Sadhbh Ní Bhruinneallaigh
- Ave Maria
- Fields of Gold (Anabel)

Orchestra:
- 14 pieces
- 12 violins, a cello, and a bass fiddle

Band Notes:
- Gavin Murphy on piano

Stage:
- A modified version of the Destiny tour set
- Drapes to the sides of the stage
- Wasn't much decoration on the risers, but obviously more stage decoration than for the Destiny DVD

Production:
- They did the usual applause recordings (aka level checks) before the show
- There were a few lighting and audio issues, so they had to redo a few of the songs a few times
(There were a bunch of problems during Mo Ghile Mear, Fields or Gold, Westering Home)
- They changed the act 2 set list during intermission
- The recorded the band percussion number and The Kesh Inn after The Parting Glass. Apparently some people started to leave before they realized there was still recording happening.
- Then, they re-recorded Mo Ghile Mear, Danny Boy, Fields of Gold, and Westering Home and another version of the finale
- The recording started around 8:20 and wrapped up between 11:00 PM - midnight

Other Notes:
- Brendan Graham was in the audience and Mairéad got emotional when introducing him to the audience
- Some people tried a stage and greet after the show, but that was not successful

Overall:
- Overall impressions I've read from the show were quite positive, in spite of the technical / production issues.
- The crowd was apparently enthusiastic and supportive.
- There have been a few people that were disappointed with the production quality and all the restarts. Some people have said they felt they were catering more to PBS than to the audience in attendance. But as a DVD recording (not just a regular tour show), some technical issues and re-takes were to be expected.
- It sounds like the show went over quite well overall.

It seems like the show went well.  I have a couple of questions though.

In Westering Home, it seems like that Anabel Sweeney sang the part Mairead typically sings, am I correct on that?  If so, why did they have Anabel sing Mairead's part out of all the girls?

Also, besides Glenn, Ronan, Carl, and that guy whose name I forget, I noticed an additional choir.  Who were they, and what songs were they in?

Yes, it sounds like it's going to be a very nice DVD.

That's my understanding, that Anabel sang the opening part of Westering Home which Mairead normally sings. One could speculate why Anabel was given that particular part:
- Westering Home already had a couple of "guest singers" in the Destiny DVD (Rebecca and Méav). Maybe they figured it was a good song to give Anabel a part in to.
- Maybe they asked Anabel which group song she wanted to do from their set list and that's the one she picked.
- Maybe Westering Home was a good song to have her blend in without re-working too much of the existing arrangement for her voice. I doubt she would have had too much time to rehearse with the group before the show.
- Maybe Westering Home just happened to be the next in the set list and Anabel was already going to be on stage, so they decided to have her be in that song. True, she didn't necessarily have to do the opening part, but maybe Gavin and Méav wanted her to open a song to give her the spotlight. Personally, I would have preferred her to open My Land, but maybe they didn't perform it (I'm waiting on the set list for Act 2).

Lots of possibilities. An interesting question, but we may not know the answer unless we can pry it out of them during a live Q+A or something.

Re: the choir. is Alan McGrath the one you're thinking of? The choir looked pretty big. We may have to wait and see if their individual names are in the credits on the DVD or in the liner notes. I'm not sure what songs the expanded choir was in. Personally, I'm going to wait for the DVD to document that.

Those dresses look different Eabha looks fresh teal, Mairead Dark Purple & Susan White. It looks Susan's opening dress is far much nicer than the bright blue for SMTTF unless its at a distance and angle it looks different or she had an extra layer at the entrance than the rest of the show. Perfect sense why her Act 2 spotlights her than Eabha is for Act 1. Mairead pretty much the same dark shade similar to Destiny her two solo had the same dress blue than the two others I wonder why I see Fire was not done in her 1st Act Red Dress. Eabha may of been Blue but lighting changed it to look different bright bluish teal to blue.

I don't understand why they had different dresses. Usually for a DVD recording of a tour they wear the same dresses. Will the dresses they wore the other night be used for 2018 tour? They may wear them for the VOA tour in Australia, Belgium, Japan, Netherlands ,Switzerland, United Kingdom.

I've noticed the drapes on both side of the stage is from Emerald tour back in 2014. I wonder if there's a warehouse Celtic Woman uses to store old set pieces from past tours.

On the tour, Mairead did do I See Fire in the first act wearing her red dress.

I'm pretty sure the choir was the four guys from the tour: Alan McGrath, Carl Maguire, Glenn Murphy, and, of course, Ronan Scolard

I've met Lisa L, Lynn(2x), Susan, Mairead C(2x), Mairead N (2x), Edel, Sarah, Nick, Craig, Anthony, Maggie, and Tommy

Yes, they were all there, but they had a bigger choir as well.

I Think it's so cool at the time of Emerald PBS show Lisa Lambe even though Chloe was still at that time the original star with Mairead Nesbitt alongside of course until after the DVD, Lisa became a spotlight for CW no more the new girl but a popular known favorite.
They had 2 Blondes & she was the star centered red head.
Now four years after it's flopped.
2 Dark Haired & one star centered Blonde Susan now the mother oldest longest member of the current group.
You can see Chloe & Susan wore Blues & Lisa L was the only one in fall light green. Now you can see Mairead C & Eabha in Blacks Dark Blue & Susan being the only one in bright Blue Silverish White I'd say. Tongue

Are you saying it's flip-flopped or are you saying the band has flopped? I'd hardly say they've flopped--you know, that whole Grammy nomination and sell-out tour and all. Tongue

Our  friend  from  France RFCW  has   his  own   way  of  expressing  himself  in  English. I  think  he  meant  "FLIP-FLOPPED"   the  order   of  the  set  list.  Not  CW  has  flopped  success  wise.   Cool  Or  perhaps  he  meant that the   vocalists  are  different than  4  years  ago.   (flip-flopped)

Cheesy flipped is probably the term and not flopped.
Like Susan is in Lisa L's green dress now!
Susan is next in line after Lisa for a different dress shade from the two other soloists.

I didn't feel flopped was a downward thing.
CW since its beginning has never flip flopped or flopped!!!!!!
Thank's for the update!
