One of the most remarkable women I've ever met! She just radiates kindness and compassion in everything she does.

And she has a bit of musical talent as well, imo.

Okay, she has a BOATLOAD of musical talent, in EVERYONE'S opinion. Cheesy  Not just one of the best in Ireland, but one of the best in the world.

I definitely agree, She has a very beautiful voice and she plays the harp so beautifully and gracefully! She does a wonderful job on all of her music but I really love:
                      Siuil a Run
                   Isle of inisfree
                   Newgrange
                   Carrickfergus
She really radiates sweetness and elegance and a deep love for what she does as well! Shes so cool! Smiley

I agree with all of the above . . .times10
There is something about her voice that reaches deep within a person.

I've known the song Carrickfergus for many years.

I always smile when Orlagh gets to the following line-

"I'm drunk today and I'm seldom sober"

.....because she is such a lady that it's very hard to imagine her even slightly tipsy!!!

Another thing about that song that I always wondered about.....
We know the singer's days are numbered, she wants to be ferried over to her love so she can die happy.
So, If she is going to her love, why does she want "a handsome boatman"? Why not an ugly boatman, as long as he can drive the boat??? Cheesy

Maybe the love is the love of a place, rather than a person and that's why she wants the handsome boatman?  That or she just wants some eye candy for the journey?  Tongue

I also really like the first two songs in Gaelic on Orla's solo album plus the 4 tracks she sings on the Duggans' Rubicon album. You can order that off of Amazon.uk.co

I've thought the exact same thoughts as well! It really put a smile on my face when I first heard her sing it. I found the lyrics very amusing.

Orlagh sort of reminds me of the classic actress Irene Dunne. They both have tremendous class, and have compassionate hearts. Smiley

I was under the impression that this song is supposed to be sung by a man.  Like "Danny Boy" it is often sung by a woman and people think it is a sad love song from a woman to a man, but it is actually a song from a father to his son.

I wish I was in Carrickfergus,
Only for nights in Ballygrant
I would swim over the deepest ocean,
For my love to find
But the sea is wide and I cannot cross over
And neither have I the wings to fly
I wish I could meet a handsome boatsman
To ferry me over, to my love and die
2. My childhood days bring back sad reflections
Of happy times I spent so long ago,
My boyhood friends and my own relations
Have all passed on now like melting snow.
But I'll spend my days in endless roaming,
Soft is the grass, my bed is free.
Ah, to be back now in Carrickfergus,
On that long road down to the sea.

3. But in Kilkenny, it is reported,
On marble stones there as black as ink
With gold and silver I would support her,
But I'll sing no more 'till I get a drink.
For I'm drunk today, and I'm seldom sober,
A handsome rover from town to town,
Ah, but I'm sick now, my days are numbered,
Come all you young men and lay me down.

People have been trying to determine the origin and meaning of that song for a long time.  The Mudcat Café forum has a great thread on it; it started back in 2000, and people have been posting on it ever since.  It's lengthy, but it makes for some pretty interesting reading.

Just a side note: in some versions of the song, the lyric is "a handy boatman".

'Tis but one more reason why I love Orla as I do. Aside from her hauntingly beautiful voice, is that smile of hers. She gets me every time with that beautiful, radiant smile. I don't know if I've ever come across anyone else in my lifetime who exudes so much happiness and joy and love and kindness as Orla does. It just seems to flow from her. She just GLOWS with happiness and love! You know the old saying ... "when susie smiles, the whole room lights up"? I have my own saying ... "when Orla smiles, the whole WORLD lights up"! Ahh yes but Orla gets me every time with that beautiful smile of hers. And throw in those beautiful smiling Irish eyes and I am yours!

Peace to all ... Bill
