Thanks Rachel. I was not sure if it would be different on a mac or not.

Hold down the alt key while you type in the numbers. When you are done, release the alt key and the letter will appear with the accent. Let me know if that works for you.

I use the num pad on the right with no problems; but, the numbers across the top of the keyboard do not work....maybe because they have 2 functions? If you haven't yet, use the num pad - just make sure the num lock is on! Smiley

Yeah, I use the number pad too. It is much faster. Phil, what kind of OS do you have? I was thinking maybe Linux is different but it is the same as windows. I am not sure why it does not work. See if this article will help fix it.

http://www.irishgaelictranslator.com/articles/alphabet/fonts-for-writing-irish/

Another tool I use is that I added the names into my dictionary in word. If I type there, than word automatically corrects it for me.

For PC, Ó = 0211

And just a few other related accents, in case anyone is interested:

Siúil A Rún, ú = 163
Coast of Galaçia, ç = 135
Non C'è Più, è = 138, ù = 151
Níl Sé'n Lá, í = 161

Hey guys,

I've gone ahead and merged this topic with the one we already had going on about accents, umlauts, and other diacritic marks here on the forum. Especially since it had veered off from just accents Máiréad's name. I'm betting Rich's walkthrough in the first post helps you all out a bit.

An accent on a letter in the Irish language is called a fada. (pronounced fahda, not fayda). That might help your search.
So....in the name of the fada, here's a list for those who use a desktop with a numeric keyboard on the right.
Make sure your "Num Lock" key is engaged. You can cut & past this list:

Alt + 0225 = á
Alt + 0193 = Á
Alt + 0233 = é
Alt + 0201 = É
Alt + 0237 = í
Alt + 0205 = Í
Alt + 0243 = ó
Alt + 0211 = Ó
Alt + 0250 = ú
Alt + 0218 = Ú
Alt + 137  = ë    (as in Chloë) This accent is called a trema.

Euro symbol - Alt + 0128 = €
UK Pound     - Alt + 0163 = £
