Title: PBS Fall Pledge Shows
Post by: btimerson on October 14, 2010, 11:51AM
I have just been notified by my contact at WXXI in Rochester, NY that they will have their first Pledge show on Saturday, Nov. 27 at 3 pm.  They expect to have the new CD "Lullaby" as a gift option.

He said that if they hear of a nearby concert that they will then have a primetime show later in the pledge season at which time they may offer tickets.

Always soooo nice to not have such a long trip

You can say that again!!! LOVED going to Chicago last year as well as my other "long drive" Florida shows, but man was it nice to get back into my own bed as opposed to a hotel bed after the West Palm show last year. :D :D :D

I haven't contacted any of my PBS stations yet to see what they're doing, but it looks like it's going to be closer to December before we start hearing about tickets/M&G packages.

Go to PBS.org/stationfinder and select the station in your city/viewing area to get the address and phone number of that station. It is much better to talk to someone in their membership dept.in person than waiting for your e-mail to be answered.Tell them you want to make a membership pledge for the next CW drive coming up.They should be able to fill you in.You may have to check back a couple of times.Good luck.

It varies by city. FL has tons of different prices. Last year, Tallahassee was $365 for 2 tickets and M&G, Orlando was $750 for two tickets and M&G but I heard they lowered it to $600 because no one was buying (I wonder why  ::)) and I know Jacksonville had M&G but I don't remember what the cost was because I didn't attend. It really does vary quite a bit, and even changes year to year.

…and as we’ve discussed in the past (and I found out from experience) getting M&G tickets thru PBS doesn’t necessarily mean sitting in the first few rows for the show, especially at a venue that reserves the front section for its members,  or its own ticket distribution system. At 3 CW shows I went to this year the best seats could only be obtained thru the venue ticket office or special sales channel, not PBS.

Very true, although with Tallahassee this year they guaranteed front row to their pledges, which was nice. You are right, though, there are no guarantees, and that's just kind of the sacrifice you make when you decide you want to go for the M&G passes. Other than Tallahassee, the only other front row ticket I had this Spring was in West Palm Beach, and since there was no M&G there, I obtained my ticket through Ticketmaster. Cheapest ticket I bought all year and pretty much the best seat, LOL.  :D

That said, when there is M&G I don't mind pledging with PBS and I also don't mind being back a few rows (note that I said a FEW not a LOT lol) if that means I will have M&G after the show. Also, I think all of us at ForumFest last year remember how the pit in Chicago was practically on the stage, LOL, so whether you were sitting front row or third row you were ridiculously close!

Anyway, to get back on topic, if anyone's interested I heard from Orlando PBS (WMFE) yesterday and they said they have no information yet about when they are airing the show and if they will be offering tickets, but that they've offered them in the past (which I already knew because I've pledged with them before  ::)) and to check back in early-mid November. I also e-mailed Jacksonville PBS and I'm waiting to hear from them!

They probably haven't finalized the schedule yet as someone earlier has mentioned with their PBS station.  You can try contacting them to see if and when they'll be airing it or you can just wait until the schedule comes out. :)  My station didn't post their schedule until very recently, so it's only a matter of time before you find out. :D

FYI for those of you in Jacksonville, FL.

WJCT in Jacksonville has "The Greatest Journey - Holiday Special" now on their schedule for the following dates:

12/1/2010, 8pm
12/5/2010, 9pm
12/10/2010, 9:30pm

No idea if they will be accepting pledges, but if I had to take a wild guess I'd say probably so given the dates. I'm going to try to get in contact with them after November 1 and see what they say.

for people in the Twin Cities, they're showing Celtic Woman: A Christmas Celebration on November 29th at 8 PM and December 4th at 9 PM.

i have no idea if they're just showing it because by then Christmas would be coming up or if they're taking pledges.

Just got an e-mail back from WPBT in South Florida. They said, "As of now, we have no plans on Celtic Women coming back" when I asked if they had any information on CW coming back to the Kravis in West Palm Beach. Be nice if they could get the name right.  ::)

I'm thinking it's because it's just too early to tell or they aren't doing tickets this time around. There was no M&G in West Palm last year so it could be that PBS is just not involved. I personally went with Ticketmaster last year (and scored front row, slightly right of center, amazing seat) since there was no M&G and intend to do this same this year, but I just wanted to check with WPBT just in case the M&G situation changed this year.

I can't imagine they wouldn't come back to the Kravis at all. They've always done two nights in West Palm Beach and each night is always a VERY packed house with a VERY enthusiastic crowd!  :-\

I'm thinking it's because it's just too early to tell or they aren't doing tickets this time around.

I got a similar reply from WMFE in Orlando.
Then I saw the following, which confirms the financial problems
many PBS Stations are experiencing:

"WMFE will give no raises this fiscal year and will ask all of its 35 full-time employees to take a two-week furlough.
But the public broadcaster has avoided any layoffs, Jose Fajardo, WMFE’s president and CEO, said Tuesday.
He estimated that WMFE was below goals for membership and corporate underwriting by $250,000."

The following quotes are about other PBS Stations, which explains why many might not be doing the live Pledge Drives:

"New data suggests that public TV stations “have not yet reached the bottom” of the financial pit
as all nonfederal sources of funding continue to wane, according to the State of Public Television Update
summarized for the CPB Board Sept. 21.
In fiscal year 2009, pubTV lost $262 million in nonfederal revenue, more than twice as much in one year
as the $105 million decline during 3 years of the post-9/11 recession, according to the study
compiled for CPB by Public Radio Capital."

"Four months ago, ASU's journalism school moved into its spiffy new home in downtown Phoenix.
But the school's public television affiliate didn't come with it.
Arizona's biggest PBS station had failed to raise enough money to pay for its move.
The delayed move is only the most obvious symbol of some serious problems.
The station has been forced to lay off a half-dozen workers; other positions are
staying open indefinitely. Its general manager "resigned," and there are currently no plans to replace him.
Of course, it's not just Eight; PBS stations everywhere are experiencing hard times."

"KPCC has learned that Los Angeles public TV station KCET is severing its relationship with PBS
amid financial and structural problems.
A well placed source says KCET will be issuing a statement at 1 p.m. explaining its decision.
"After four decades as the west coast flagship PBS station, this is not a decision we made lightly.
We have been in discussions with PBS for over three years about the need to address challenges
that are unique to our market as well as our station."

The Providence PBS station charged $250;00 for two tickets and your "chance" of an M&G in a lottery system..I understand only 14 were chosen...so you could spend $250.00 on tickets and take a shot in the dark as to whether you`d get an M&G....cut me off a piece of that action.... >:(

Yeah, I also contacted WMFE just to see if they had any info. The same girl that I've spoken to for the past two years told me she has no info, but she did tell me to keep checking back, so I am wondering if it's just too early at this point. Kravis Center doesn't have any info either, but they also said to check back later.

What happened earlier this year? Were the 2010 tour tickets available thru PBS in late 2009?

My guess is that you guys are way too early with thinking about 2011 concert tickets. The only thing PBS will probably offer during pledge drives the rest of this year will be the new CD. I’d look for concert tickets being hawked early next year.

Exactly, and there are a number of stations that are offering concert tickets and M&G packages for the 2011 shows. I expect more will be offering the same thing closer to December. The concert tickets have never been offered early in the year, especially when the tour starts in February. I've always purchased my concert tickets/M&G in November/December.

Hope it happens!! So far I’ve searched all six venues & four PBS stations that I’ve used over the past 2 years and none of them lists a 2011 CW concert on their schedule. I’ve checked other possible sites too (like Radio City Music Hall) and there’s nothing…… so far. I guess I'll just have to depend on this forum!!  :)

Title: Re: PBS Fall Pledge Shows
Post by: Emily! on November 07, 2010, 07:01PM
What goes on at a meet & greet?

You get to meet two of the girls and have stuff signed. Which two you get is completely random and based on a schedule made up by their tour manager. Very rarely, a M&G will have more than two, but that's extremely unusual, so you always assume it's going to be two. So anyway, basically what happens is you're led into the M&G room after the show by someone from the crew and then they announce which girls you will be meeting. The two girls come in and sit at a table, a line is formed, and each person in the meet and greet gets to come up to the table, chat with them very briefly, and have a limited amount of items signed (it's usually 5 items total). They're a lot of fun, albeit pricey at times. ;) I've been to 6, and I love doing them! It's cool because when you start to get sad about the show being over, you realize, "Wait! I've got M&G!" ;D

You get Meet and Greet passes through PBS. They don't have M&G in every city, but they do a lot of them. Check with the PBS station in the city where you're going to see CW. If they're sponsoring the show and offering tickets as pledge gifts, they might also be offering Meet and Greet passes. :)

AND....  you need to act quickly when they do become available!  Check local PBS stations now for any chance they will have M&G tickets should there be a local concert.  These tickets will go very quickly - they are limited to usually 20 pairs (+/-) for any given concert.  While there is no Spring 2011 schedule out just yet, many people have checked with their local PBS stations to let them know they would be interested in tickets.  You need to be proactive on the issue of getting M&G tickets without being a nuisance.  Did I say act quickly?  ;)  ;D

Okay, just spoke with the nice lady at WMFE in Orlando.

She said they will more than likely have tickets for CW next year, but they are still working with the promoter and such and don't have everything lined up/set in stone.

But....the good news is that it sounds like CW will definitely be back in Orlando in 2011, which is really the information I wanted from her! LOL! :)

Hi everybody!  Thought I'd let you all know, I just got off the phone with Pat Smith at WPSU in University Park, PA.  I'm going to put this information on the Tour dates thread, but there is one slight change to the info that White Rose posted earlier ... the first pledge show will be at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 27.  They changed the schedule a little bit from the 3:30 p.m. airing they had originally scheduled.

I'll be putting the concert date and what other information I have on the other thread!  (yes, I'm taking a page from Rich's book and leaving this one as a teaser!  LOL)

Keep in mind that some PBS stations (like the Providence one) use a lottery system for M &G`s.....after you`ve spent $250.00 on tickets, you "might" get chosen for an M&G ...or not...only 14 were chosen for last springs M&G.  Ask first to see how they`re arranging things.

Folks, it really isn't necessary to include the entire post in a quote.  You can easily delete all but the pertinent words or sentences you want to address.  Some of our threads are really getting huge, because you have to scroll past multiple lengthy quotes.

I got an e-mail from WMHT in Troy NY saying that the station will be showing CW for a pledge drive on Nov 27th at both Noon and 4 pm (two different CW shows, but they didn’t tell me which ones). They currently plan a Greatest Journey CD/DVD pledge gift, but nothing about the Lullaby CD.

They currently have no plans for a 2011 CW show, but Orla Fallon will be performing in Albany NY at TheEgg on April 23rd 2011, and they will be offering a pair of M&G tickets for that show, along with both Orla’s Christmas CD & DVD, for $250.

Pledge gifts include the new CD "Lullaby" and tickets + M&G for the April 15, 2011 Show at Morris Performing Arts Center.

The Rochester, NY PBS station, WXXI, is offering the Lullaby CD as a gift for a pledge of $40.

Go to:  http://interactive.wxxi.org/support/membership (http://interactive.wxxi.org/support/membership)

and select "One-Time Gift".  On the Information page, be sure to select the Celtic Woman Lullaby CD from the drop-down list of Gifts.  Other gifts are also available.  Unfortunately, there are no concerts near Rochester this time around so no concert (or M&G) tickets are available.

Hey ya'll.

In case anyone cares, the Tallahassee, FL PBS station, WFSU, is now taking pledges online for tickets for the February 8th show in Tallahassee at the Civic Center. The M&G package is $365 and you can pledge online at www.wfsu.org. They only have 30 M&G passes so act fast if you want them. I'm passing on this show because of the timing and also because I don't like the venue, but I thought I would post it in case there's anyone here interested!

For anyone looking at Clemson or Charleston, SCETV showed A Christmas Celebration last night and offered the following: $180.00 for a pair of tickets to either Clemson or Charleston. $300.00 for a pair of tickets plus a pair of meet & greet passes to either Clemson or Charleston. The M & G passes are limited and 10 pairs were mentioned at one time. They offered ACC CD and DVD for lower pledge amounts but no mention of the Lullaby CD, perhaps because it's not December yet.

OK, GPB is currently playing ACC and at the first pledge break offered the following for Atlanta, Savannah, and Macon: $250.00 for a pair of tickets - best of house seating, enter in a drawing for the M & G for which there are 10 pairs, and the TGJ CD. Only one Atlanta show was mentioned in this offer - I think it was the Thursday show but don't quote me. No mention of the Lullaby CD.

I contacted WGBH in Boston again on Monday and they confirmed that they will not be offering any CW tickets with or withou M&G's.
She also told me that even though CW has a show at the Wang Center on their tour schedule, she thinks that will change because of a mix-up of some sort because the Wang Center has another act booked on the night CW says they will be there.

If I find out any new info on the subject I'll post it here and if anyone else finds anything out, could you please post it here as well.
