Title: Problem with forum?
Post by: The Leprechaun on October 08, 2012, 04:05PM
I don't know what exactly happened, but recently I was having problems with the forum. I wanted to go to a different post and suddenly I found that I couldn't access the forum for some strange reason. I forgot to write down what it said that the cause was. Can one of the mods explain what happened?

a few times I`ve gotten "resource limit exceeded....please try again later". IDK what that means but everything is usually okay after a few minutes.

I have received that same message a few times, and as Kevin says you can usually get back on and post fairly soon.

probably within the last 4-6 weeks. It doesn`t happen very often but before the message appears(black wording on a white background), the site slows way down as you post.If you wait 2-3 minutes, the site returns to normal. Havn`t seen it in the last couple of weeks.

I have seen it off and on over the past several months but not in the last 2-3 weeks.

I'm  guessing that mean's there is too much activity at one time... but I might be wrong about that.   :-\

got the "resource limit is reached"  this afternoon. The site slows to a snails pace...anything you click on gets "  waiting for Celticwoman.com" for like 2 minutes then the " resource limit reached...please try later" comes on. After a few minutes, it returns to normal.

Yeah, I'm with ya. I see on the server end that we're tripping the alert, but it doesn't tell me why. The host and I are trying to puzzle it out so please hang in there for a bit.

Title: Re: Problem with forum?
Post by: aislin on October 26, 2012, 11:32PM
Hey guys,

After getting together with our hosts, it looks like the problem we're seeing is caused by an upgrade to CloudLinux that balances out server usage and the uptick in traffic we're seeing because of the Christmas release and upcoming tour. There is another round of updates scheduled to hit our server next weekend that should give us a few options to try and limit our server usage without us having to change our hosting situation. So please bear with us a few more days and we'll try and get this all sorted out.

Yes, that has happened to me a couple times. I've noticed the times it has done that to me were on the "Add or Subtract" game. Maybe people are posting too fast? ???

It sound like you might have a bad cookie. Delete the forum's cookie and see if you're still getting the error.

PS: Please start a new thread if you have a new problem. It helps me to keep track of everything better. Thanks!

That is a temporary server hiccup. Nothing to worry about unless you see it again.

There was a server hiccough for a few minutes it looks like. Not our fault and it was fixed quickly.

Got Resource Limit Reached messages again from 6:56 PM to 7:06 PM CST today. The forum was also inaccessible for 7:30 - 10PM CST yesterday, but CloudFlare was serving a backup.  Is there something wrong with the box the forum is being hosted on? :( May be worth checking into. ;)

Yesterday afternoon, at some point, there was a HUGE fiber outage around one of the server facilities that our host uses. The host had to re route around that cluster of servers which means all the rest of the servers had to pick up the slack. The CloudFlare message started showing up when the fiber died and the limit messages are more on a broad scale and not us specifically while they're getting everything fixed. Our host doesn't control the fiber, when I asked them they told me it's under ATT's control so we're probably going to be seeing a few problems until Monday when their regular workforce is at work. Sorry, I know that's not helpful.

No aislin, it's very helpful. Thanks for the details. I understand now what was/is going on.
I've heard in the past of how big a problem it can be to repair fiber runs; Not fun at all, I'm sure the process to repair fiber hasn't changed in the last few years.

Please let me know if you see any more of these. It looks like something somewhere has a glitch, from the speed the errors were resolved it looks like the host does know about the problem and is on top of it. But if we keep seeing them I'll get in contact and see if we can find a more stable fix.

Title: Re: Problem with forum?
Post by: littlecubspirit on February 23, 2014, 09:32AM
Yep. Me too. And this does affect everyone on the forum who tries to access it when that error is active because it is a problem with the server (big computer that has the job of running the website) and the amount of things it is being asked to do (help us navigate the website) or store (like all our posts). We see "Resource limit reached" when it gets overwhelmed and are able to continue as normal when the activity level between this and other sites calms down or is otherwise addressed by allowing more space.

Not entirely right. We are only allowed a certain amount of CPUs and bandwidth at any given time. If we start using more than that the server automatically locks us out so we aren't causing slowdown on any of the other sites on our server. So the entire server isn't shut down, just us. I'm going to have to talk with our host and try and see if we can find a way to either move us to a less crowded server or if we can buy more usage as we're starting to see the message with increasing frequency.

Error 524 Ray ID: 10620ad73da20104

Those are problems with CloudFlare which is, short version, a program that our server runs for faster content delivery. Those two errors mean that, for whatever reason, CloudFlare couldn't connect to the server. Nothing we did in other words, just a glitch the host had for some reason or another.

Looks like the server was just having some issues, if some of you were seeing DNS issues or Couldn't find host it usually just means either the server, or the server farm, was having an issue. It looks to be evened out today but if you see anything else, let me know.

Thanks for getting it fixed.  Nothing major yet, just updated some info on the one show we know about.

Funny how now matter how long one runs a forum, there are always new things to learn.  I know I still find new stuff on the forum I help moderate.
