Title: It's the GREEN violin!
Post by: hesprit on April 18, 2007, 05:19PM
*lol*

I've read comments about Mairead's green violin a few times, but hadn't seen it .. then a couple of days ago I was going through YouTube to find clips to show a friend (and now a new fan) about Celtic Woman.

I came across this clip, Duelling Violins, from Michael Flatley's Feet of Flames!   I believe, if I'm reading the very brief bits of information, that the second violinist is Cora Smith (apologies if I'm mistaken) and this was recorded at Hyde Park, London.

Hope everybody enjoys it as much as I did!

I posted this over on Lisa's site a few days ago too!  It's a different video of the ladies fiddling.

"and if you just want to see Mairead and another lady fiddler, Cora Smyth (both in leather) this is the You Tube of it, "Strings of Fire"."

Hey, that's great Sassy!  I just watched it, it seemed the different mic'ing system for the violins made it a lot more difficult for both of the ladies, but still a good clip to have!

Thanks!

There's another one - it's the Feet of Flames finale with Michael Flatley and the entire show.

It's long, but if you watch - you'll see Mairead out front about 7:56 into the video and then about a minute later, Flatley and Mairead do the "Celtic Sway"(my name for it)! *S*

Glad you enjoyed the other, I enjoyed watching the dueling one you posted.  It's great! *S*

That "dueling fiddles" in Hyde Park.....did you notice those heels on Máiréad's boots?

I could never walk in those let alone dance and skip!

Great videos, all of them.

Yes I love that green violin.

Yeah, definitely did notice those heels .. they must have been trying to keep Mairead and Cora at least close in height, although Cora had some heels on hers too .. but not like our little imp!

LOL  love the saying Maggie!

Question - I know it's often referred to as fiddle rather than a violin, but isn't Mairead trained as both?   Traditionally and classically trained?  So which term does she use herself, is it a fiddle or a violin?

I think when she plays classical music she will refer to it as a violin.

When she's rockin', it's a fiddle!!!

Yes she can play anything.
Her mother can too....she is an adjudicator of all styles especially traditional Irish, she has played internationally also.

Take a look at the original LotD video from their original public performance.  The colored fiddles are there too.  Flatley thought they would make it easier for the audience to tell the two players apart (Don't ask, it's Flatley).

The heels were also from Flatley, as Mairead and Cora are so far apart in height (6-7 inches) that it was felt 5-6 inch heels were needed to keep them on an even keel.  In the original performance DVD, she is only wearing about 3-4 inch heels, but the HUGE stage for Feet of Flames (almost a football field wide) made folks nervous that the shorter performers would get lost in it's sheer size, so almost all the shorter performers wore VERY high heels, Mairead included.

I highly recommend the two LotD performance DVDs, Mairead's really good on both.

I got my copies from Amazon.com from Great Britian. Costs more because of the currency difference.

I found my Lord of the Dance video at a Half Priced Books store.  I don't think it is a hard video to find.  I was surprised to learn that besides being a wonderful fiddle player, Cora Smyth (and her sister who she is currently touring with) are both practicing MD's.

Both Máiréad's and Cora's fiddles are from a company called Skyinbow that provided many fiddles for all of Michael Flatley's productions. The lady's endorsement page can be found here (http://www.skyinbow.com/misc/artistes.htm).

On Amazon you can buy the Michael Flatley Collection DVD, which includes Feet of Flames and Lord of the Dance, for only $15. It can be found here (http://www.amazon.com/Michael-Flatley-Collection-Dance-Flames/dp/B0001FVDQO/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/104-0440479-4123944?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1179717693&sr=1-2).

Or if you would rather buy them separately at $12 apiece:
