Title: Caledonia
Post by: zankoku on October 31, 2008, 08:48AM
I have listened to both Lisa's and the Celtic Thunder version s of this song and love them both.

I love Lisa's for the beauty of her voice (The visual on the DVD shows up when listening on to teh CD.)

but

I love the solid male voices of Celtic Thunder beelting out the song.

So, which one is better? I could say it is a tie.

 :-\

yeah right

The ending of Lisa's is what gives her version top billing.

Coming from me, this may sound like heresy.  But I still have a soft spot for Dougie Maclean's rendition of his own song.  But the thing that puts Lisa's version over the top is the visual effect of watching her perform it.  It's one of those solos where her musical theater background just shines through.  To borrow a phrase often used by music critics, Lisa "believes" what she sings.

But you are a 'Tad Biased' and so am I. I totally agree the visual is what does it.

....as she obviously does for ALL the songs she sings!   ;D

I like Lisa's version of Caledonia the best.

I'm all over Lisa's version. I love it. It's probably one of my favorite "Lisa songs" from CW. :)

I love CT but, to me Lisa owns that song. But, I did hear her do it first.

Definately Lisa's song.

Lisa's definitely. When Lisa sings it, I cry almost ever time. Unless I'm in public, in which case I try really had to keep it together. When I hear CT's version, I think it's good, but then I shrug and go on with things as though I didn't listen to it. Lisa's sticks to me for a while.

I do like the CT version but their voices are powerful in that song and it doesn't flow.  Lisa's voice is just so soft and earthy and I have used it to put me to sleep or calm me down whenever I am frustrated.  So after that analysis I would have to say...... Lisa!

(But the whole analysis I always knew that Lisa had the better Caledonia  ;))

I've heard Caledonia done by several artists.  But Lisa's version is my favorite by far, as she really draws us into her performance.  As others have said, it's not just the song, it's the entire performance (package) and how she obviously feels the music.

(And it's stuck in my head again now... I'd had "The Call" in there for the last few days)

I agree with Rich about Dougie MacLean's rendition......and I would go one step further, the one on his CD is my favourite version.

Granted, Dougie is not as stunningly pretty as Lisa, and the sound quality is not as good as Celtic Thunder......however, Dougie wrote the song, put his soul into it,
and he has of course the Scottish accent it should be sung with.

Let's face it, he is from Caledonia, it is in his heart.

He has a great sense of humour too, as demonstrated in this YouTube clip:

When I first heard CT's version...I had to get use to hearing a Male voice singing, since I have never heard Dougie sing it. Lisa was the first. I agree, the visual is what sets Lisa's version apart. That darn BOUNCE!! :D.  but it's not just that, when I first seen ANJ aired, and watched Lisa sing this song, I was once more drawn in by her warm smile and the glint in her eyes. Also when she does the Found Other friends on the way part, and she encompasses the audience..I actually got a goosebumps. You can tell she is singing it from her heart, and that cute Bounce helps too  ;D

It's no contest, as far as I'm concerned. (Rich knows my feelings here). I think "Caledonia" is just SO Lisa! It's her song. It fits her. It suits her so well. I must have seen (on DVD) Lisa perform this a 1000 times by now (literally) and I still get tears in my eyes watching her perform "Caledonia". It's not to take anything away from anyone else who performs this song but ... Lisa, what can I say. In fact, if I remember correctly, way back when I first discovered CW, it was Lisa and "Caledonia" that won me over big time! Not just the song but (as Rich said) watching Lisa perform this song is the ultimate. She is radiant. She exudes a beauty that is completely unmatched. By anyone. (In my opinion). That said, I don't think I could ever ask for a better version of this song than when Lisa performs it.

Hope I'm being clear enough here on this.  ;)

I will say that I was surprised how good the other two sounded. I was not sure how guys doing the song would work either. But Lisa did a more popular arangement of the song where the guys did a more ethnic sound, like you might hear in a pub let's say. While I do like the fellas sound o.k., and it would fly in a pub with some fine brew, it's just not LISA. Lisa is also the first I ever heard do Caledonia so I am sure she locked it up in my head forever. When I learn it on the keyboard I will wish she were singing along....... ;)

Amen to that Life! Amen to that! My thoughts exactly. As I say, not to take anything away from anyone else who performs this song but, 'tis Lisa and her performance of "Caledonia" which, in my opinion, remains unmatched by anyone else. And, given how I feel about Lisa, chances are, no one will ever change that for me.

I once saw a "Celtic Thunder vs. Celtic Woman: Caledonia" video, considering they would show about 10-20 seconds of CW's version then a whole minute or more of CT, So I could sort of guess their opinion  :D. Anyway I like Lisa's version better, but hey I usually don't compare male and female versions of songs. But here's an exception  ;D

Title: Re: Caledonia
Post by: CWFan2 on May 09, 2009, 04:45PM
For me, first of all, Lisa's version was the first verision I'd ever heard (strictly Rock, Country and Bluegrass prior to discovering CW and my love of all things Irish) and many times, it's that first version that just sticks with you. Secondly, and of course this is merely my own opinion but, I've alway thought, always felt, that women were just naturally better singers than men, anyway. Mind you, that's just my opinion. And it's certainly not to say that men can't sing. Of course they can. But, I'd rather hear a beautiful lass sing a song as opposed to hearing a man sing it. That's just me. But, that said, I of course like Lisa's version far better.

I would have to go with Lisa's version of Caledonia. Probably
because I prefer females singing these types of songs. And I
also prefer just the one singer, singing it. And who could resist
Lisa's lovely voice. :)

Absolutely. I couldn't agree more. (I still feel that "Caledonia" is 'Lisa's song'. "Caledonia" is just so Lisa)! And I love this on "Live At Slane Castle". With Lisa and Helen, Ann, Kira, Lorraine, Roisin and Rosemary in on it, this has become an absolute favorite of mine. But, I also love, of course, "Send Me A Song"!!

I don't know how anyone on earth could possibly sing these songs better than Lisa.

Caledonia is my favorite Lisa song in the group but I love all her songs in the group. Lisa's version is by far the best version ever. Once Celtic Woman does a song, no other person should do it, even if they did it first. I also heard someone from Celtic Thunder do You Raise Me Up and it didn't work to well either. Well, that's my opinion.

I much prefer Lisa's rendition over CT's.  I'm also a big fan of Dougie MacLean's version.  If you're interested in an altogether different take on this wonderful song, try Delores Keane's.  Her rendition borders on haunting, which I'm not sure is the proper delivery, but it works for me at times.

Yes, it's great.
It brings a smile to my face when I remember how adorable it was to see Lisa singing this onstage, when she was clearly pregnant with Ellie.......as she sang:

"I don't know if you can see
the changes that have come over me".....

everyone in the audience was smiling with her.

Then when she sang "The Blessing", placing her hand over Ellie.......there was not a dry eye in the house.

Lisa certainly knows how to draw out all our emotions......

Yes, I find her voice so unique and wonderful, like a siren, spitfire, yet entrancing, not strident as so many other voices are...so perhaps you are right...shes the one and only of her generation!!!..When she comes out on stage and smiles at
people in the audience, she knows she was born to perform, like her husband Scott Porter said of her and the others.

Don't forget the grand daddy of 'em all ... Caledonia, Michigan! Pop. 1102! (Located just south/southeast of Grand Rapids).

(Disclaimer: I in no way mean this as a rub against the fine town of Caledonia, MI. I'm certain it is a lovely town in it's own right). ;)

Besides, any place on earth named "Caledonia", in my opinion, can't be all bad. And, it is my favorite song Lisa sings and one of my top favorites from CW, in general.

I have listened to both Lisa's and CT's version of Caledonia, and to be honest, I just really like Lisa's better.  Maybe its because I heard it first, and I tend to like the first version I hear (plus, it doesn't hurt that I LOVE Lisa!), but I just wasn't crazy about how CT did it....
