Title: Screen Capture How To
Post by: aislin on June 25, 2007, 06:03PM
I've noticed that in a few threads people have been asking about how to do screen captures. So here is a brief tutorial:

1. Either using you're DVD's or YouTube stop the film where you want the picture.

2. Push the Print Screen (PrtScn)  button on your keyboard.

3. Open a photo editor such as Paint or Photoshop.

4. Choose Edit -> Paste from the menu.

5. Use the crop tool to edit out everything but the picture you want.

6. Save it!

If you have any questions please feel free to PM me.

Good to know. I might just have to try it sometime.

Title: Re: Screen Capture How To
Post by: Trouble on June 28, 2007, 12:31PM
No. Okay here are the specific instructions!
1. Freeze the youtube clip where you want it.
2. Press ALT and SCREEN PRINT at the same time!
3.pull up Paint
4. on Paint go to EDIT and then paste
(now the whole screen will show up! don't panic!
5. now an arrow thing will show up when you move across the pic.

6. move the pic alittle so that you can see the white background

7. click on the white backgorund

8. now your arrow will change to a cross

9. take your mouse and place it over the picture and drag it over the whole pic but don't include the volume stuff.

10.now your pic should have a dotted box around it and your cross should be  arrows

11.right click on your mouse over the pic and a menu comes up. click on CUT.

12. Now your pic has been cut

12. Now go to EDIT again and click on SELECT ALL (the rest of the pic will be boxed)

13. Now press DELETE  on your keyboard don't worry yet!

14. Now right click on your mouse and another menu will pop up

15. Click on PASTE  and the pic you cutted will appear!

16. Now click on the white area

17. around the white area are small blue boxes you have to look hard

18. take one of the corner boxes and drag it towards your pic so that you have surrounded your pic.

19. Save your pic and if you have a photo website like Photobucket save it to there and then post your pic on the forum!

PM if you need help!

how can you use photoshop? i'm trying to make clearer pics from the dvd's but i can't on photo editor

There is only so much clearing you can do. If you take a small pic and enlarge it there won't be anything you can do.  Smaller images only have so many pixels and enlarging them only enlarges that pixel and doesn't add anymore. If that makes sense. I can recommend a Dvd player on your computer such as Power DVD which allows you to grab screens right off them.

If your picture is blurry there are a few things you can try. Duplicate your layer with the render. 1 - Filter - Other - High Pass (around 1.5-2)  put this on overlay and merge down. Next Filter - Noise - Median, change this opacity to around 35%, and set this layer to Soft Light and merge down. After this you can sharpen the picture using smart sharpen and adjusting them to your liking. (I'd like to thank the very talented Sigma for teaching me this technique)

I've attached this picture - The Top is the original sig I made blurry intentionally, the bottom I've applied the technique to sharpen. Enjoy :)

this is great to know...but i have a problem. when i take screen-caps, they work...until i take out the dvd. then the pic disappears. there's still a file, but the pic is just black.  ??? ??? ???

Title: Re: Screen Capture How To
Post by: Edgeman on June 28, 2007, 10:16PM
That happens with a few of the computer DVD players, most of those however have a hotkey to capture the screen shot. Check around on the control panel. If you have  power DVD player its "C" once you capture that way you can open them and save the same as discussed earlier in this thread ;)

orlafallonfan,

I'm not entirely sure what you mean. I'm going to assume that when you push save and then go look for your picture it's not where you thought it would be. If that's the case then check when you save that you are saving the picture where think you are. Also check to make sure that you have permission to write to the file that you are trying to save in. Failing all else have widows search for the picture by name. If none of that works, let me know and I'll see what else I can come up with.

Mel,
I don't know how to insert your quote (like Moscapoet). Try screencaps from the first part of Ashoken Farewell from about 20 sec in to about 45 sec, she is pretty (very much so) still, and gazing into the camera (and our souls!). I find it a glimpse into hers, and I like the sigh right after she blinks. There is also a place right at the end of My Lagan Love, just before she shivvers.
Don't worry, Moscapoet, I'm just totally enthralled by and enamoured of her (same as you!).

Wonderful examples 2BOB! Yes indeed it is a glimpse into an incredibly beautiful soul straight from Heaven. Sometimes screencaps are the best way to get that in a still photo.

How do you take screenshots on a Mac????

I'm trying Print Screen but it's not working.....

Title: Re: Screen Capture How To
Post by: aislin on March 04, 2008, 09:19PM
Erin,

I'm no where near a Mac at the moment but this is what Wikipedia said on the matter, as did several other sites I looked at.

Quote
Pressing Command-Shift-3 takes a screenshot of the entire screen, and Command-Shift-4 takes a screenshot of a chosen area of the screen or if you press Space afterwards you can choose a window on the screen to individually screenshot. These images are saved to the desktop, but if you hold down the control key with the rest of the keyboard shortcut, the pictures are copied to the clipboard instead. These shortcuts also work in Mac OS Classic.

Try that and if it doesn't work let me know.

Erin,

Unfortunately, you can't directly capture screenshots from DVD's with a Mac running OS X or later. It can be done though! I use a free program called  DVD Capture (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/9292). Its simple to use, just run it in conjunction with the DVD. PM me if you have any questions.

Your computer has to have a drive clearly marked as a DVD player.  It will not play in a CD-only drive.

Yep, if you look at the CD drive itself it should have a logo similar to this on it:

If it does you can play DVDs.

Here are a few from ANJ that I took with PowerDVD.

First one is of Chloe in The Sky, The Dawn, and the Sun
(http://i682.photobucket.com/albums/vv183/Ggunsailor/Screenshots/Chloe.jpg)
Isn't she pretty?

Second one is of her smiling at the camera, a little cropped because I used it to make a Piece of Flair for Facebook
(http://i682.photobucket.com/albums/vv183/Ggunsailor/Screenshots/Chloe2.jpg)
That smile is one of the reason why I love her. ;D

Third one is of Spanish Lady
(http://i682.photobucket.com/albums/vv183/Ggunsailor/Screenshots/ChloeandLisa1.jpg)
I always love the interaction between these two on onstage

Fourth is another Spanish Lady
(http://i682.photobucket.com/albums/vv183/Ggunsailor/Screenshots/ChloeandLisa3.jpg)
Chloe's a little blurry, but I love her expression!

Fifth (another Spanish Lady) is Chloe and Lisa singing together
(http://i682.photobucket.com/albums/vv183/Ggunsailor/Screenshots/ChloeandLisa2.jpg)
It's blurry; I think I was getting the hang of using the 'Capture' button on PowerDVD.

Sixth (Spanish Lady one more time) is a better one of Lisa and Chloe
(http://i682.photobucket.com/albums/vv183/Ggunsailor/Screenshots/ChloeandLisa4.jpg)
They're totally having fun with this song!

I plan on putting up a few more, as soon as I have enough time.

I play my DVDs on a lap top that has powerDVD and things work good, BUT...

Now I cant seem to get a screen grab with the caption on it at the bottom. It used to work. In fact I even printed one out and got it autographed. But now when I hit the capture button, the pic is there, but no caption. The setting for captions is clearly on, and when viewing they can be clearly seen. But not after on the captured pic. Any ideas on what is wrong? I tried pausing, then hit capture. I also tried just hitting capture without a pause. Wont work.

Also, at the beginning of The Greatest Journey DVD there is an intro with each CW and some type of pretty backdrop, like waterfall or flowers. I cant pause to do a screen grab there. I did successfully get a grab by just hitting the screen grab button though, but the pic doesnt look as sharp as I expected. Its not really blurry, just not sharp. Anyone else try this? They look like they could be very nice pics, like for autographs and latter framing.

I'm sorry to inform you, but this technique apparently doesn't always work on PCs... I've been trying to do the PrintScreen method for years, and it has never worked. Maybe this is because of the applications I use? I don't know, but when I try pasting the captured image into a program using PrintScreen, the area where the video used to be turns black. Maybe this problem is just happening on my computers, but I don't enjoy trying this technique again and again (it always fails to copy the video), that's why I'm now using the free VLC application. That seems to work well. Thanks, Brian for the suggestion!

Guardian of the Rose,

You have interlacing turned on. Interlacing is tied to hardware acceleration and it basically causes the video to be displayed on a different layer. When you push Print Screen you are capturing the normal surface layer of the screen which isn't where the video is being displayed when interlacing is turned on. That's why your screen captures are turning out black. Google interlacing and whatever software you're using to learn how to turn it off in that program.

You can't.  iDVD has a copyright protection that won't allow screen capping.  I've read that for some vids it's possible to download them to your Mac into either iMovie or iTunes and then it might be possible to screencap I followed the directions with a CW DVD and it didn't work.

I'm using "Total Video Converter" by TinySoft (http://www.effectmatrix.com/) for ripping CDs/DVDs as well as screen capturing and I got no problems 'til TGJ was released. 'Windows Media Player' told me s/th like "you can't view this DVD 'cause it's protected" ??? (strange MS behaviour). Then someone told me a small trick: enable "allow multi instances" in settings/options (if available and/or possible) and run the application more than once. In many cases now it's possible to rip/capture the protected CD/DVD (e.g. TVC). This results in a documented bug of 'Microsoft Windows' (I would call it a feature ;) ) since NT 3.51 and nothing has happened; the bug/feature is still present with 'Windows Vista' and 'Windows 7'!

What if you don't have "PrintScreen" on your keyboard?

Then you have to use an alternate capturing software. 'Cause I'm using "Corel Capture" (that's included in the CorelDRAW! package) I don't know about free tools available on the net but I'm sure there're some and maybe someone will post the links here.

On a mac-book you do "shift command 3" that will capture the photo now when you want to edit the photo open the photo you do click on file then take screen-shot from selection and that will allow you to edit you photo! I hope that helps for any mac users

Also on a mac you can hold in command + shift + 4 and that will allow you to click and create your own screen shot, meaning that if you wanted an image on only part of the screen....amazing trick.

Also, another great program for Mac OSX only is a program called "Capture Me" which allows you to take screen shots of anything and everything.

I'm a Windows Vista user.  :)
I'll keep looking here to see if someone finds a link to a free screen capture program.

Here's a list to several free windows screen capture programs:
http://downloads.zdnet.com/search.aspx?kw=screen+capture&osfilter=windows&licfilter=free (http://downloads.zdnet.com/search.aspx?kw=screen+capture&osfilter=windows&licfilter=free)

I didn't check any of them yet, so I'm not able to say anything about the quality of the sources. I'm using ZDNet (http://www.zdnet.com/) regulary since several years to check and try software before I buy it and I never downloaded a source that contains viruses, trojans, or spyware 'til now. But this doesn't mean that this may happen sometime. So please be careful and be sure that your virus scanner is active before downloading and installing any software!
