OK, I posted the Welsh National Anthem.

This is the "Celtic Culture" section, and I must also post the Irish National Anthem, in the Irish language of course, which ALWAYS moves me to tears.
This is at the Ireland V England Rugby game:

Incidentally, this is at Croke Park, the stadium where in 1920, British soldiers opened fire on the crowd during the Dublin V Tipperary game.

That was lovely  Smiley

I love listening to the anthems of other countries, but I've got to say, I'm liking the Irish one more than most others!!!
Thanks, Maggie  Smiley

This is what the Rugby crowd were singing, it's what we sing at our Irish Club St Patrick's dinner dance.
Here's your assignment......learn by heart before next March 17th:

Amhrán na bhFiann

Seo dhibh a cháirde duan Óglaigh,
Cathréimeach briomhar ceolmhar,
Ár dtinte cnámh go buacach táid,
'S an spéir go min réaltogach
Is fonnmhar faobhrach sinn chun gleo
'S go tiúnmhar glé roimh thíocht do'n ló
Fé chiúnas chaomh na hoiche ar seol:
Seo libh canaídh Amhrán na bhFiann.

Curfá: (Chorus)
Sinne Fianna Fáil
A tá fé gheall ag Éirinn,
buion dár slua
Thar toinn do ráinig chugainn,
Fé mhóid bheith saor.
Sean tír ár sinsir feasta
Ní fhagfar fé'n tiorán ná fé'n tráil
Anocht a théam sa bhearna bhaoil,
Le gean ar Ghaeil chun báis nó saoil
Le guna screach fé lámhach na bpiléar
Seo libh canaídh Amhrán na bhFiann.

Cois bánta réidhe, ar árdaibh sléibhe,
Ba bhuachach ár sinsir romhainn,
Ag lámhach go tréan fé'n sár-bhrat séin
Tá thuas sa ghaoith go seolta
Ba dhúchas riamh d'ár gcine cháidh
Gan iompáil siar ó imirt áir,
'S ag siúl mar iad i gcoinne námhad
Seo libh, canaídh Amhrán na bhFiann.

Curfá

A bhuíon nách fann d'fhuil Ghaeil is Gall,
Sin breacadh lae na saoirse,
Ta scéimhle 's scanradh i gcroíthe namhad,
Roimh ranna laochra ár dtire.
Ár dtinte is tréith gan spréach anois,
Sin luisne ghlé san spéir anoir,
'S an bíobha i raon na bpiléar agaibh:
Seo libh, canaídh Amhrán na bhFiann.
Curfá

OK then! Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

Take a look at the Welsh National Anthem I posted.
That is spine-tingling stuff too.

As a Nation, nobody can sing together like the Welsh. And that's from an Irishwoman!

They have a tradition of superb male choirs.
Many of them were formed in the coal mining villages of South Wales, which no longer exist.

I agree, the Irish national anthem is one of the most beautiful in the world.  I must confess that I also have a very soft spot for O Canada (having lived in Montréal for almost two years).  Here's a vocal rendition:

and a very nice acoustic guitar version:

I think most countries have lovely national anthems...and then there's America...with our German drinking song melody....(not that I don't love America or anything...because I do....I really do)....

I just think some anthems are very stirring and emotional.

The Irish and Welsh definitely are.
They are sung with a lot of passion and patriotism.

Some leave me cold.......like the British one, even though I have lived in the UK longer than anywhere else. I think it's pathetic.

If you could take personal loyalties and bias out of the mix, you would have to admit that some are very "ho-hum".

La Marseillaise is quite a nice, stirring tune. I can sing it all the way through when I've had a Guinness or two! Grin

Maggie, you are so wonderful at finding things to share with us.  Don't take any trips anytime soon, we miss you too much.  BTW, could you find one of the Scottish national anthem and post for us?  Thanks.

There is no official national anthem of Scotland.  The two most popular candidates for the role according to an opinion poll are Flower of Scotland and Scotland the Brave.  Here's a video of the Corries singing Flower of Scotlandhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qf4weBCWKUE - and this is Katie Adams singing Scotland The Bravehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDVbYaKEd6s

Absolutely! Another stirring anthem.
Here is "Flower of Scotland" sung by The Corries, then it shows the Scottish Rugby Team singing it before playing England, and celebrating when they won the game. Watch it to the end.

Here it is again by the Scottish players and crowd at the game:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XA6cnXFiE6I

In case you didn't understand their accents, here are the Lyrics:

O Flower of Scotland,
When will we see your like again
That fought and died for
Your wee bit hill and glen.
And stood against him,
Proud Edward's army,
And sent him homeward
Tae think again.

The hills are bare now,
And autumn leaves lie thick and still
O'er land that is lost now,
Which those so dearly held
That stood against him,
Proud Edward's army
And sent him homeward
Tae think again.

Those days are past now
And in the past they must remain
But we can still rise now
And be the nation again!
That stood against him
Proud Edward's army
And sent him homeward
Tae think again.

O Flower of Scotland,
When will we see your like again
That fought and died for
Your wee bit hill and glen.
And stood against him,
Proud Edward's army,
And sent him homeward
Tae think again.

Why do I suddenly feel like I'm invisible?  Cheesy

Flower of Scotland is a great song, Maggie, but it's not the official anthem of Scotland.  As I said in my previous post, they don't have one.

Thank you to you both!  The Flower of Scotland at the rugby game gave me goosebumps and I loved the thistle on their sweaters.  This is definitely getting passed on to the Carmichaels and the Baxters!  Thank you Rich and Maggie again!
