Yes Granuaile is pronounced "Grawn-ya" and the tune is therefore "Grawnya's Dance"
She was the famous Pirate Queen, who led a very adventurous life. She was a real-life heroine, not a mythical princess.
She was the daughter of Eoghan Dubhdara Ó Máille, she lived from 1530 to 1603.
Her name is also written "Gráinne Ní Mháille" .....you might find it easier to use the English translation....Grace O'Malley.
Just a word about Irish last names.....
In the Irish language, only a man can have the prefix Ó as in Ó Máille (O'Malley) as it denotes "son of"
Ó'Máille's daughter would have the prefix Ní
For example, I have always used my maiden name, so in English it is Margaret Ryan.
In Irish it is Máiréad Ní Riain.....which means I am Margaret, daughter of a Ryan....a descendant of Ó'Maoilriain (O'Mulryan) of North Tipperary.
When Dave proposed to me in Rome, I told him yes, but....I wanted to hold onto my Irish maiden name, he said OK, understood.
