Jig
« on: February 16, 2011, 11:01PM »

Scott Porter tweeted this earlier today and I thought I'd post it here for anyone who might be interested:

It's the trailer for Jig, a new documentary about the 40th Irish Dancing World Championships is Glasgow.

I heard some talk about "Jig" at the Florida Fleadh a couple of weeks ago.

It was filmed at the Irish Dance World Championships in Glasgow in March 2010, by this Company for the BBC:

QUOTE from http://www.wellparkproductions.com/filmography/jig.html

"A Wellpark Scotland Production for BBC Scotland and Creative Scotland.
Sue Bourne’s first feature documentary brings dance, music, grace, rhythm and wonderful stories and characters to the big screen. After months of negotiation her documentary film unit was allowed, for the first time ever, behind the normally closed doors of competitive Irish Dancing. JIG is the story of the 40th Irish Dancing World Champion- ships, held in Glasgow in spring 2010. What Bourne and her cameras discovered was a fascinating, albeit rather weird and wonderful, world that casts a spell on everyone who comes into contact with it. These days Irish dancing is a global phenomenon and JIG was filmed in the U.S.A. Europe, Russia, Scotland, England and Ireland. The documentary tells the story of a handful of the thousands of dancers – from tiny ten year olds to the best of the best – who travel to Scotland to compete for a coveted world title.

JIG is about ambition, dedication and incredible hard work. About little girls and boys who practice 364 days a year for just a few minutes on stage. About teachers who live, eat and breathe dance. About teenagers who turn their back on youthful excess for their hobby. And about families who sacrifice everything for dance.

Wigs, fake tan, make up and incredibly expensive dresses. The thrill of the contest with every form of heartbreak and joy in the climax. Remarkable dancing and remarkable stories that will make the world want to JIG!"

This is from Wellpark Productions about distribution of the film::

"JIG, THE FILM -- WELLPARK, 15/02/11 12:29:25, Tue [7]
Hello all, Just wanted to post here and thank you all for the support for the film.
We are really delighted that the trailer ( see it here - www.youtube.com . . . ) has already had over 100,000 views on youtube!
So thank you! We can't wait for you all to see the film.
We have a UK and EIRE distributor so it will be hopefully coming to the cinemas near you by the end of April.
For those outside the UK and Ireland - we will let you know as soon as we have any dates as to when you
can view the film and buy the DVD. jig-the-film.com will be updated regularly! Thanks again!
www.facebook.com . . ."
then further down the post, someone asked about it being aired on BBC -
"It will be screened on the BBC later in the year. The film was funded by BBC Scotland and Creative Scotland.
It will be out in the cinemas, then screened on BBC2, then available for purchase on DVD.
All updates on jig-the-film.com, thanks! (NT) --   Wellpark, 15/02/11 15:35:00, Tue"
Sounds like it may be in the cinemas around the time of this years Worlds! Exciting!!"

To be honest, I don't like to see the wigs, makeup and fake tans that seem be standard these days....
those lovely dancers don't need them. I much prefer the natural look.
It is expensive enough for parents with the dresses, shoes, and all the travel involved in Competition.
A Feis doesn't need to look like one of those ghastly pageants!  Shocked

You can see how very big Irish Dance is in the USA if you use the task bar on this site,
also if you want to see Irish Dance Competition up close, go to one of the feiseanna listed:

The next World Championships are in Dublin:          The All-Ireland Championships are in Killarney:

As in that quote from Wellpark, this documentary movie was funded by BBC Scotland and Creative Scotland.
It will be shown in cinemas in the UK and Ireland by the end of April, then later in the year on BBC2 TV.
After that, the DVD will be released, probably first in the BBC Shop, and Amazon UK.

So it will be a while before it comes here to the USA.
There is no advance notice of it yet of course, on the BBC Site or Amazon.

I'm guessing it will spark another surge of interest in Irish Dance.
I'd better warn Laura she will be even busier!  Cheesy

It looks like the link for the film that Maggie listed is actually owned by Sara Bourne, the documentarian who made the film. The link to the international production company, Bankside Films, who made and posted the trailer is: http://www.bankside-films.com/. And their page for the site is: http://www.bankside-films.com/Jig.html

Yes, I watched the trailer when Scott tweeted about it, and it looks interesting.  Maggie, I'm with you on the wigs, hadn't even really noticed the fake tans, but I was surprised by the wigs.  I don't follow Irish dancing, but I've seen it from time to time, and the wigs just seem hokey and kind of jarring, totally unnecessary in my opinion.  Still, it looks like it would be an interesting film.

True....I went to the source....."follow the money!" Wink

Bankside is a good Sales & Distribution Company for British and Irish films, based in mid-town London.
They are handling European sales of Jig, and maybe US Sales too.

"Bankside Films has taken on feature documentary Jig by Sue Bourne
and will introduce the film to buyers at EFM."
(EFM = European Film Market)
