Oh my goodness! This was a really good Facebook live show! It was fun and informative. Lots of great music and previous moments.
Sometimes the mic positioning made it a bit difficult to hear words. Other than that minor issue, it was a REALLY enjoyable experience.
Stars of the Show (her violins):- Her violins are made in Europe and finished in the US (in New York)
- 3 violins were displayed prominently on stage:
* Hibernia
* Celtic Dawn
* Raining Up
- The other 2 violins in the line got stage firght
* Invasion
* Butterfly
- Mairead played Matthias and also some of the violins from her line
- For those that haven't heard her pronounce it before, Matthias is roughtly pronounced 'MATThias' as opposed to 'Ma-THY-as'
The music:Mairead talked about and performed several of the songs from Hibernia. The following is a list of some of the songs performed. It's not a complete list, but the songs are at least in order:
- Japanese Hornpipe
- The Contradiction
- Sean O Duibhir An Ghleanna
- The Ballydesmond Polkas
- There Is No Night
- Captain H
Dreams come true:- 2 young ladies got to perform violin on stage with Mairead Nesbitt and get some pointers!
- A lady got to play cello on stage with Mairead and close out the Facebook live stream
- They were pretty good!
Edutainment:- Mairead demonstrated various styles and techniques, including:
* hand/bow positioning
* placing emphasis on the off-beat to add flair
* ornamentations around a dominant note
* slides
- Mairead talked about and demonstrated some musical improv skills
- Mairead explained that a slip jig is performed in 9/8 time
- Devil's Bit Sessions (her family album) is expected to release in May, 2017
* There were some Celtic Woman band members on the album
Q+A Highlights:- Some instruments besides violin that Mairead played growing up or subsequently tried:
* Mairead violin, tin whistle, flute, Uilleann pipes (roughly pronounced 'You-LAY-an' pipes)
- Mairead went into the audience and asked what instruments they played
- Mairead asked a few violin players in the audience what they find the most difficult skills to learn / implement
- Mairead talked with people in the audience about classical and contemporary styles, the differences, and the challenges of trying to learn both
- The first song Mairead learned on violin was 'Dawning of the Day' (that's the english translation of the Irish song title)
- Mairead's favourite Celtic Woman track to play was Granuaile's Dance
- Are the other girls in Celtic Woman your friends
* It's at about 1:08:00 into the video
* I found this the absolute most adorable question and answer of the show
* I actually started tearing up a bit it was so sweet
Wrap-up:This show was really nice!
Mairead was great interacting with the audience and encouraging people to step outside their comfort zones.
There was a lot of variety and it was all entertaining.
I so wish I had been able to see it in person, but Wisconsin is a bit to far (probably 11 hours drive without stops). I want to see the Hibernia tour sooooo badly!
