She was famous in the UK long before she came to the USA.
She started out as a singer / dancer with a raunchy pop group called "Hot Gossip" in 1978 when she was 18.
They only had one hit but appeared many times on TV shows.
Here she is in the middle of the album cover:
(yes, the title is "I lost my heart to a starship trooper" !
)
Other members of the group went on to become Hill's Angels on the Benny Hill Show, but Sarah went on to Musical Theatre.
She married Andrew Lloyd Webber in 1984. They met in 1981 during rehearsals for"Cats" in London.
She starred in many of his productions, including "Requiem" in which she sang
"Pie Jesu".
In 1986 she starred as Christine in "Phantom of the Opera" with Michael Crawford, and I saw that unforgettable performance at Her Majesty's Theatre.
In 1988, he was asked to bring "Phantom of the Opera" to Broadway.
However, American Equity insisted he had to employ an American Actress as Christine, and he refused. He said it was Sarah or no deal.
So Sarah it was, and it went on to become the longest running production on Broadway.
Sarah and Andrew divorced in 1990, and since then she has appeared all over the World, performing solo or with other artists.
Here she is in Japan this year, at the opening of the World Championships in Athletics:
