carry me...on the waves

« on: May 05, 2007, 12:42AM »

I was watching Mike&Mike in the morning on ESPN one day this week and Golic gave some of his strange facts during that bit they do for the show. Windmills turn counter-clockwise in all countries of the world....except Ireland, where they turn clockwise. I have several thoughts on this. First, is it true? I did find another web page that said the same thing, so maybe there is something to it. Second, doesn't clockwise & counter-clockwise depend on point of view? But even so, that just means Ireland windmills turn counter-clockwise while the rest turn clockwise. Ireland would still be different. Third, why is Ireland different? Maybe there is some interesting reason.

Being contrarian is part of Irish nature.

This is Blennerville windmill in County Kerry, it turns clockwise:

Here is a windmill in Holland, the blades indicate that it also turns clockwise.
I don't think I've ever seen one that turns counter-clockwise.

wouldn't it depend on the angle of the blades?
