One of the questions we hear most often is "How do I get my keyboard to make the little 'o' with the umlaut in Chloë's name?"  (Or the á or é in Máiréad, etc.)  So I've made up a chart of the most common Windows ALT key character codes.  These tables show select codes only, not all possible codes.  But I think they are the ones you're most likely to use.  You can view or download the list in PDF format by clicking this link.

If anyone has my r_ropes@bellsouth.net email address saved, you can delete it. I got tired of subsidizing AT&T.

Yes Rich, we certainly have some special characters on this Forum!
Some more special than others...... Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

Back to the accents over letters.....when writing Irish words, an accent is called a fada.

In any other language it is called a muda. (Just a little Maggie humour there  Wink  )

On a Mac:

Use the OPTION key. Hold down OPTION and push ‘s’ to get ß. For the umlauted characters, hold down OPTION and push ‘u’. Release OPTION, then type the desired base letter (a, o, u, A, O, or U). The umlaut will appear over the letter you typed. (So to type ü, you should hold down OPTION, press u, then release OPTION and press u again.)

For those using Apples/Macintosh

*while pressing OPTION, press e.  Release OPTION and press a* = á
*while pressing OPTION, press e.  Release OPTION and press e* = é

I would like to make a suggestion. When we write Máiréad's name, can we use the accents? It is part of her name and omitting them is the same as spelling her name wrong. This actually applies to Méav and Chloë too.

You can either use copy and paste or use the alt key.

alt + 0225 = á
alt + 0233 = é
alt + 0235 = ë

Thank you

I also found a couple of shorter ones, in case it makes it easier to remember.

alt + 160 = á
alt + 130 = é
alt + 137 = ë
